Eleven race wins in two sessions at Lake Phalen
ST. PAUL - Minnesota rowing closed an impressive day on the waters of Lake Phalen at the Twin Cities 2K behind 11 first-place performances. The action took place over two sessions Saturday in St. Paul, Minn., and was the first time it has hosted a regatta in a decade.
The Golden Gophers welcomed Iowa, Kansas, and Wisconsin, to the Twin Cities for seven boat classes and battled a strong headwind on a course slightly shorter than a standard 2,000 meters. The Maroon and Gold walked away with six race wins in the morning action before claiming five more victories during the finals in the afternoon session.
Racing head-to-head against the Hawkeyes for the first four heats, Minnesota picked up a win across all four crews, highlighted by a dominating 11-second victory by the First Varsity Eight boat that opened the regatta and set the tone with the fastest finish of the day. It was a closer fight between the Second Varsity Eight boats with the Gophers edging their rivals by just 2.4 seconds.
Following three-consecutive wins from the Maroon and Gold's Varsity Fours, the Fourth Varsity Eight crew secured another 10-plus-second win, this time finishing ahead of both Iowa and Wisconsin to end the opening session.
After a lunch break, the afternoon started in a similar fashion for Minnesota as its top crew was not affected by the changing conditions and cruised to another powerful performance. The next race proved to be the closest of the day for the Maroon and Gold as the Second Varsity Eight boat covered the course less than one second ahead of the Hawkeyes, while all four crews were within 10 seconds of each other.
The First Varsity Four followed with another commanding effort to secure its second win and the Second Varsity Four needed a strong surge to the finish line for a narrow victory. The Gophers placed second in the next two races, both by less than two seconds, before capping the home event thanks to a victorious effort from their Fourth Varsity Eight crew in decisive fashion.
