Rowing completed first regatta Saturday
MINNEAPOLIS - The Golden Gophers rowing team kicked off their fall season Saturday with a strong showing on home waters during the 45th Annual Head of the Mississippi Regatta, earning multiple event victories and showcasing impressive depth across all boats.
With temperatures reaching the high 80's during a sunny day on campus, the water started to get choppy due to strong winds just after Minnesota launched its boats. That did not deter the first crews from strong performances. The Maroon and Gold swept the top four spots in the Women's Collegiate 4+ with the first three finishers all covering the nearly three-mile course along the Mississippi River in under 18 minutes.
In a rare opportunity to compete in small boats, senior Manon Field claimed the top spot in the Women's Open 1x, while junior Lexi Schimnowski also earned a top-five finish. The Gophers added another sweep in the Women's Open 2-, taking first and second in the event.
Minnesota's freshmen impressed during their collegiate debut, placing second and third in the Women's Collegiate Freshman 8+ to round out a successful opening weekend.
