Race win from 1V8 crew Sunday
INDIANAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota closed its 2025-26 rowing season Sunday during the final day of the Big Ten Championships behind an eighth-place performance from Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Ind.
Competing against rising winds as the day progressed on the waters of the Indianapolis Rowing Center, the Golden Gophers picked up a team-high 60 points from their First Varsity Eight crew during a win in the Petite Final. It was a total team effort from Washington as the Huskies won a gold medal in six of seven race classes, securing the B1G title for a second-straight year with 350 points.
During the awards ceremony that followed the regatta, three members of the Gophers' rowing team were honored. Junior Lexi Schimnowski was named to the All-B1G First Team and senior captain Manon Field earned an All-B1G Second Team selection, while sophomore Emma Herstad was given the B1G Sportsmanship Award for 2025-26.
The first race of the early morning featured the fastest boat representing the Maroon and Gold as the First Varsity Eight crew closed a victory in the Petite Final. The Gophers surged through the third 500-meter section before holding off USC at the finish by 1.2 seconds.
After going back-and-forth with Indiana through the middle of the 2,000-meter course, it was Minnesota's Second Varsity Eight boat that had the last surge and secured a second-place effort. The Gophers' First Varsity Four boat stayed ahead of border rival Wisconsin all the way to the finish line and raced to third place in the Petite Final.
With its two crews in the Grand Finals late in the regatta, the Maroon and Gold turned in a sixth-place result from the Second Varsity Four, securing 18 team points, and another sixth-place finish from the Third Varsity Four, registering 12 points.
In the final race of the championships for Minnesota, the Third Varsity Eight crew fought the headwind and battled to finish second in the Petite Final.
