The Golden Gophers won 11-0 as they outhit Carleton 16-3 on Wednesday at Siebert Field. Shortstop Michael Handel and outfielder Jordan Smith both hit home runs for Minnesota (11-17), and the Gophers scored 10 of their runs in the second and third innings.

Both teams threw a different pitcher each inning. Lucas Gilbreath (1-1) was credited with the win, tossing a 1-2-3 second inning with two strikeouts preceding the Gophers' first runs. The Knights got their first hit in the fourth inning.

Handel's second home run of the year led off the Gophers' four-run second. Third baseman Micah Coffey singled and scored on a passed ball. First baseman Toby Hanson hit a double to left, Smith walked and center fielder Dan Motl drove both in with a double to left-center.

The Gophers batted 10 the next inning to tack on six more runs on seven hits. Smith hit his second homer of the season off the right foul pole to knock in three runs. Also during the third, Motl hit his second double of the game, and Handel clubbed an RBI double. Catcher Matt Stemper (RBI), Toby Hanson, second baseman Connor Schaefbauer (RBI) and designated hitter Matt Fiedler all hit singles.

Motl, Schaefbauer and Toby Hanson all hit 2-for-3. Handel hit 2-for-2 and Stemper 2-for-5 with an RBI double that score shortstop Luke Pettersen in the eighth.

Minnesota's nine pitchers allowed just one walk and one hit batsman, and the defense did not commit any errors. Reggie Meyer, Gilbreath, Jeff Fasching, Fred Manke, Jordan Jess, Fiedler, Lance Thonvold, Dalton Sawyer and Tyler Hanson combined for the shutout. Sawyer struck out the side in the eighth. The Gophers struck out 11 Knights, and the Knights struck out 10 Gophers.

Thaddeus Gregory (2-1) pitched the second for Carleton and got the loss. Willie Freimuth had two of the Knights' three hits in the game.
