2016 - SENIORÂ SEASON:
Finished fourth all-time in single-season program history with 10 saves - appeared in 23 games, the 13th-highest total in a season for the Gophers - struck out 35 in 27.1 innings - held held hitters to a .172 batting average and maintained a 3.95 ERA - in Big Ten play, converted seven saves and held a 0.84 ERA in nine appearances with 13 strikeouts and held the opposition to a 0.94 batting average - received the Paul Fortin Scholar-Athlete Award - named to NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List - Academic All-Big Ten. Game Highlights: Tossed 2.2 innings in a relief appearance versus Oregon State (2/21) - earned the save after throwing 2.0 innings and striking out two at Campbell (2/28) - struck out two and got out of a bases-loaded jam at Georgia State (3/6) - tossed 2.0 innings with six strikeouts and allowed just one hit in two relief appearances at Seattle U (3/12-14) - made an appearance on the mound at Utah Valley (3/20) - converted a save opportunity at No. 23 Missouri State (3/26) by striking out the final batter in the series-clinching win - tossed the final 1.2 innings of relief and allowed just one hit while converting a save versus Iowa (4/3) - totaled three strikeouts in 1.1 innings of relief against South Dakota State (4/12) - locked down two saves with three strikeouts and did not allow a hit in 1.2 combined innings versus Maryland (4/15-4/17) - earned the save in the series-opening win at Northwestern (4/22) - struck out the side in the series-clinching win at Illinois (5/1) - totaled three strikeouts in 2.0 innings of work versus Kansas (5/4) - tossed the final 2.0 frames and struck out two to secure the save in an 8-6 win against Indiana (5/7) - pitched a flawless stanza with one strikeout in home contest versus Indiana (5/8) - earned his eighth save of the season with a five-pitch final inning at Purdue (5/13) - secured his ninth save by going the final 1.1 innings with two strikeouts that clinched the Big Ten regular season title against Ohio State (5/20) - tossed a scoreless inning and struck out one versus Michigan (5/26) - picked up his 10th save of the season after tossing a scoreless frame with one strikeout against Binghamton (6/4) - closed out an elimination game win by hurling 2.0 stanzas, highlighted by two strikeouts versus Wake Forest (6/5) - secured the final two outs, including one strikeout at Texas A&M (6/5).
SUMMER BASEBALL:
Played for the La Crosse Loggers in the Northwoods League - touted a 4-1 record in 26 relief appearances - maintained a 1.30 ERA through 34.2 innings pitched - held a 3:1 strikeout-to-walk ration with a total of 47 strikeouts - allowed only 18 hits all season and held opponents to a .145 batting average - boasted a .952 WHIP - finished third in the league in ERA among pitchers to make more than 20 appearances and throw 30-plus innings - played in the NWL Major League Showcase.
2015 - JUNIOR SEASON:
Named the Gophers' George Thomas Most Improved Player - led the team with 22 appearances and three saves - had a 3.86 ERA and 1-2 record in 25.2 innings pitched - struck out 25 batters and walked 12 - had a 2.40 ERA, .167 opponent batting average and all three of his saves in 14 Big Ten appearances - had 16 strikeouts and six walks in conference play - turned in seven straight appearances without allowing an earned run (4/4-4/25) - Academic All-Big Ten. Game Highlights: First four outings of the season were scoreless at Houston (2/15), Texas (2/21 and 2/22) and Florida Gulf Coast (2/27) - struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings at Maryland (3/22) - entered with two men on base to earn a 2.1-inning save with two strikeouts at Nebraska (4/10) - earned a save throwing 2.0 scoreless innings with two strikeouts against Penn State (4/17) - struck out three in 1.1 innings while allowing one run against Michigan (4/25) - strung together three hitless appearances at Iowa (5/8 and 5/10) and against Michigan State (5/15), and added a scoreless, three-strikeout outing against Michigan State (5/15).
2014 - SOPHOMORE SEASON:
Made nine starts and four relief appearances - had a 5.90 ERA and 0-6 record in 39.2 innings pitched, striking out 23 batters - held hitters to a .265 batting average. Game Highlights:Â Went 3.0 scoreless innings on four hits against Northern Illinois (2/15) - allowed hits and two runs in 4.2 innings pitched in a no-decision to Louisiana Tech (3/1) - struck out a season-high five batters and gave up one run on two hits at Coastal Carolina (3/8) - pitched a season-high 5.1 innings, allowing five hits, three runs (two earned runs), and two walks in a losing effort at Sacramento State (3/15) - struck out three in 4.0 innings pitch while allowing three runs, one earned, against Michigan (4/5) - came in relief against Concordia-Moorhead (5/7) and did not allow a run, while striking out two.
2013:
Started all four games in which he made an appearance - pitched a total of 17.0 innings to a 5.82 ERA and a 1-1 record - set career lows in hits allowed (19), earned runs (11), walks (6), and WHIP (1.47) - pitched to a 3.19 ERA in his final three starts. Game Highlights:Â Went 6.0 innings, allowing only three hits, two walks and one earned run while striking out a career high of seven against Western Michigan (2/24) - started the Northern Illinois game, lasted 5.0 innings, giving up only one run while striking out two - struck out four and only walked one in 3.1 innings against Western Illinois (3/10) - sidelined the remainder of the 2013 season due to an injury.
2012 - FRESHMAN SEASON:
Appeared in 12 games and had five starts as a freshman - held a 2-2 record in 24.2 innings pitched and a 4.01 ERA - struck out 22 batters and allowed 11 earned runs. Game Highlights: Made his collegiate debut against South Florida (2/19) - made his first collegiate start against Hamline (3/7) when he held the Pipers scoreless and gave up two hits in three innings pitched - went three innings against North Dakota State (3/21) and held the Bison to one hit, three strikeouts and one walk in 3.0 innings - allowed two runs in the win over South Dakota State (3/28) - pitched 2.0 innings against Augsburg (4/3) - started against SDSU (4/11) and went 3.1 inninga with four strikeouts and a walk - struck out a career-high five batters in his longest outing of the season against Nebraska-Omaha (4/17) - saw action against Penn State and held a strikeout in the 0.1 inning he pitched (5/5).
HIGH SCHOOL:
Graduated from Ripon High School and played for coaches Dan Jonas, Bill Kinziger and Howard Hansen - was named the 2011 Fox 11 Large School Player of the Year and the 2011 Class A State Legion Most Valuable Player - also selected as the Oshkosh Northwestern All-Area Player of the Year and was selected to participate in the Wisconsin American Legion All-Star game at Miller Park - was named a second-team all-state pitcher his senior year - named his conference and district's player of the year and was also named to first-team all -conference and all-district - also an all-conference honoree in 2009 - led the Tigers to a 20-3 overall record en route to a conference and Division 2 State Championship in 2011 - went 10-0 in 65 innings pitched and held a 1.14 ERA with 117 strikeouts his senior year - four-year letterwinner in baseball and two year letterwinner in basketball - in Legion baseball, went 6-1 in 32 innings pitched and a 3.28 ERA, 70 strikeouts and 15 earned runs - played for the Wisconsin Rivercats, the GRB Rays and the Cincinnati Reds Midwest scout team - Academic All-State and National Honor Society member.
PERSONAL:
Sports Management major - son of Lee and Cathy Jess - has an older brother, Jeremy - born on January 29, 1993 - signed up for the bone marrow/stem cell registry through Be the Match following pitching coach Todd Oakes' cancer diagnosis and was a donor for a patient in 2013 - lists winning the 2011 Division 2 High School State Championship as his most memorable sports thrill - likes to play pool, ping pong, golf and cards.
