2016 - SENIOR SEASON:
Tabbed All-Big Ten Second Team - led the team with 42 runs scored and 19 doubles - hit .336, slugged .485 and reached base at a .398 clip - recorded 25 extra-base hits, including three triples and three homers - drew 22 walks and swiped seven bases - finished second on the team with 77 hits - paced the club with 34 hits in conference play, including a team-best three triples, and four stolen bases - received the annual David Chelesnik Jr. Memorial Award - Academic All-Big Ten. Game Highlights: Notched a double and an RBI in the season opener versus Utah (2/19) - hit 2-for-4 with two runs, a double and an RBI against Utah Valley (2/20) - tallied a pair of 2-for-5 performances and scored a run in contests at Campbell (2/26-2/27) - recorded 18 putouts in four starts in center field at Seattle U (3/11-3/16) - went 4-for-8 with two runs, two walks and an RBI at Utah Valley (3/18-3/20) - hit 2-for-3 an RBI and scored a run against Augsburg (3/22) - tallied a pair of RBI singles in series win at No. 23 Missouri State (3/25-3/26) - picked up two hits, scored twice and recorded a putout in doubleheader split with Iowa (4/3) - went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI against Northern Illinois (4/6) - broke open the back end of the twin bill at No. 25 Michigan with an RBI single (4/8) - laced a run-scoring single and drew a walk against South Dakota State (4/12) - drilled four hits, including one double and a triple, and added three RBI in series win versus Maryland (4/15-4/17) - reached base twice by way of a single and a walk and scored a run against North Dakota State (4/19) - collected six hits, three runs, one RBI and a stolen base in series sweep at Northwestern (4/22-4/24) - drilled a double to highlight 2-for-4 night at the plate with a run at North Dakota State (4/26) - tallied five hits, including a pair of doubles, to go along with two RBI and one run as the leadoff hitter in series win at Illinois (4/29-5/1) - blasted five hits, including his second home run of the season, and crossed the plate three times in midweek non-conference series sweep against Kansas (5/3-5/4) - belted a no-doubt roundtripper to highlight a six-hit weekend at the plate that featured three doubles, three RBI and three runs to cap a 14-game hitting streak versus Indiana (5/6-5/8) - scored a career-high four runs and reached base four times by way of two singles, one double and a walk in a 14-4 series-clinching win at Purdue (5/14) - drilled game-clinching two-out, two-RBI single to right and netted a double that secured the sweep at Purdue (5/15) - set a career-high with a 4-for-4 performance that featured three runs and a double at South Dakota State (5/17) - rattled off five hits, including a triple, and added two RBI in final regular season series against Ohio State (5/19-5/21) - netted three hits and scored a run in the Big Ten Tournament (5/25-5/26) - laced a double and scored a run against Wake Forest (6/3) - collected a pair of base knocks and added an RBI versus Binghamton (6/4).
SUMMER BASEBALL:
Played for the Willmar Stingers in the Northwoods League - played in 63 games and hit .312 - held a slugging percentage of .437 and got on base at a .413 clip - laced 72 hits, including 13 doubles, five triples and three home runs, and added 21 RBI - finished in the top-15 in the NWL in average, runs, triples and walks (40) - recorded a hit in 46 games - held a 10-game hitting streak and a pair of 6-game streaks - participated in the NWL All-Star Game at the midway point of the season - tabbed NWL Postseason All-Star - played in NWL Major League Showcase.
2015 - JUNIOR SEASON:
Started 36 games, primarily in center field - batted .291 with a .359 on-base percentage, 30 runs scored and 19 driven in - hit nine doubles and three home runs - recorded a 17-game hitting streak (3/13-4/18) and 21-game on-base streak (3/13-5/9), the longest such streaks by a Gopher in four years - batted 30-for-64 (.469) during the hitting streak, which ended his first game back in the lineup after an injury (5/5) - succeeded on 13 of 16 stolen base attempts, tied for seventh in the Big Ten at the end of the regular season - his seven steals in conference play ranked fifth - hit .312 with six doubles and three home runs in Big Ten play - Academic All-Big Ten. Game Highlights: Went 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs at Houston (2/15) - started his hitting streak with a 2-for-4 day against James Madison (3/13) with two runs, an RBI, a double and a walk - scored a season-high three runs and went 3-for-4 with an RBI against Monmouth (3/15) - led off a game with his first career home run at Maryland (3/21) - went 3-for-3 with two runs vs. St. John's (3/31) - went 3-for-5 with a double, a run, two RBIs and a stolen base at Rutgers, then hit 2-for-5 with two runs, two more RBIS, a home run and another steal in the second game of the doubleheader (4/4) - hit a pair of doubles at Nebraska (4/11) - went 3-for-5 in the second game (4/12) - homered in a 2-for-5, two-run, two-RBI game against Michigan State (5/15).
2014 - SOPHOMORE SEASON:
Started 29 games in center field, with a .969 fielding percentage - missed some action after an injury early in the season, but re-entered the lineup in late March - nine-game hitting streak was second-longest on team (4/26-5/10) - had nine multi-hit games - had a .283 batting average and .646 on-base + slugging percentage - received the team's George Thomas Most Improved Player Award - Academic All-Big Ten. Game Highlights:Â Went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and run scored against Northern Illinois (2/15) - in the Michigan series (4/4-6) went 2-for-6 (.300) with a stolen base and run scored - hit a double while going 2-for-2 in an extra innings loss to Nebraska (4/13) - swiped a base in a multi-hit game against Iowa (4/19) - hit 3-for-4 with a triple at Iowa (4/20) - had four hits, two RBIs, three runs, a stolen base and was hit by pitch in a doubleheader against Penn State (4/26) - hit two doubles against Augsburg (5/6) - had a season-high three RBIs in a 2-for-5 effort against Purdue (5/10) - scored both of Minnesota's runs in a win at Indiana (5/15).
2013 - FRESHMAN SEASON:
Played in 27 games, starting in 14 - batted .194 with a .356 on-base percentage - scored eight runs and had three RBI - had a 1.000 fielding percentage and 28 putouts. Game Highlights: Started and smacked a double against Western Michigan for his first collegiate hit (2/23) - batted 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs vs. Utah (3/2) - walked twice and drove in a run vs. Western Illinois (3/8) - went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI against Iowa (4/26).
HIGH SCHOOL:
Two-time all-state selection as a junior and senior with Burnsville Blaze - named a finalist for the Lions Male Amateur Athlete of the Year - Lions All-Star - Academic All-State - Mr. Baseball finalist - starting centerfielder for the Blaze - as a senior, batted .413 with 14 runs batted in, 29 runs scored and had an on-base percentage of .478 - team captain as a senior - batted .456 as a junior, with a school record 41 runs scored, had 18 runs batted in and 25 stolen bases in just 27 games - helped the Blaze to the Minnesota Class AAA State Championship in 2011 - all-conference selection as a junior and senior in baseball as well as all-conference in football (quarterback) - played summer American Legion ball with the Burnsville Cobras.
PERSONAL:
Sports Management major - Born January 20, 1994 - son of Kevin and Mary Motl - has two older siblings, Kyle and Mandy - father, Kevin, played football at Wisconsin and grandfather was a part of the 1941 national championship basketball team, also at Wisconsin - enjoys going to the family cabin, hunting and fishing.
