Box Score: Minnesota 10, North Dakota State 0
No. 25 Minnesota got an all-around team performance in its 10-0 shutout win against North Dakota State on Tuesday night at Siebert Field. The Gophers (22-11) smacked 13 hits, held the opposition to just four and did not commit an error to lead them to their eighth win in their last nine contests.
The Maroon and Gold were paced by Cole McDevitt and Connor Schaefbauer at the dish, who each contributed three hits and two RBI. C. McDevitt launched his second career homer, while Schaefbauer added a double.
Toby Hanson also contributed with two RBI on a single to guide Minnesota to the non-conference result.
The Gophers used six pitchers to complete the game, with Jake Stevenson doing most of the heavy lifting. Stevenson got the nod and tossed 3.0 scoreless innings. Fred Manke and Nick Lackney threw the next three innings and allowed just two hits.
The experienced trio of Ty McDevitt, Tyler Hanson and Brian Glowicki finished the game by splitting the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. The group did not allow a single baserunner and amassed five strikeouts.
Minnesota started fast in its first at-bat as Dan Motl and Schaefbauer led off with back-to-back singles to right field. However, the Bison (17-17) would find a way to get out of the inning unscathed.
The Gophers were held without a hit until the fifth inning when they put two on base through singles from C. McDevitt and Luke Pettersen, but again were held in-check as the game remained scoreless through six innings.
In the seventh, the Maroon and Gold found a breakthrough. Minnesota strung together four straight singles from the bats of Matt Stemper, Eddie Estrada, C. McDevitt and Riley Smith en route to taking a 2-0 lead.
Later on, with the bases loaded, Schaefbauer and Matt Fiedler drove RBI singles to left field to extend the home team's lead to 4-0. With ducks on the pond, To. Hanson blooped a single into right that scored two more. The Gophers' big inning came to a close after Micah Coffey brought in another that gave Minnesota a 7-0 lead and matched the team's biggest output in an inning this season.
In the eighth stanza, the bats stayed hot as the Gophers netted three more runs. C. McDevitt opened the frame with a deep home run over the wall in left for his second career shot. Schaefbauer laced an RBI double down the opposite-field line and Alex Boxwell produced the game's final run on an RBI ground out.
Glowicki was then brought on to close the game and he did just that. The junior struck out the first two batters before inducing the final out on a fly out to Motl in center field.
With the win, Minnesota has eclipsed its win total from a season ago with 19 regular season games left on the schedule. The Gophers also scored 10-plus runs for the seventh time in 2016.
The Maroon and Gold return to the diamond this weekend in a Big Ten clash at Northwestern, April 22-24.
