Bio
Ty McDevitt took the reins of the Minnesota pitching staff from long-time pitching coach Todd Oakes in 2017, one year removed from his playing days at the University of Minnesota.
The 2017 season proved an historic one for the Gopher pitching staff. Closer Brian Glowicki set the program record with 16 saves while Tim Shannon set the program record of 31 appearances by a Gopher pitcher in a season.
Starting pitcher Lucas Gilbreath was named to the All-Big Ten First Team with a 5-2 record along with a 2.66 ERA and 92 strikeouts, tied for eighth most in a season by a Gopher pitcher. Gilbreath's 1.03 WHIP ranked within the top 50 in the country. Glowicki was named All-Big Ten Second Team after going 2-1 in 28 appearances while boasting a 2.20 ERA and 39 strikeouts from the bullpen. His 16 saves led the Big Ten and were tied for second most in the NCAA.
Gilbreath and Glowicki were both named semifinalists for College Baseball's Hall of Fame Pitcher of the Year and Glowicki was also a semifinalist for the 2017 Dick Howser Award which is given to the top player in college baseball.
The 2017 Maroon and Gold pitching staff recorded 414 strikouts, only 13 short of the program record. The squad tied for second in the conference with least amount of hits (449) and lowest batting average against (.239).
Gilbreath was selected in the seventh round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft by the Colorado Rockies. He was the highest Gopher drafted since Tom Windle was selected in the second round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2013.
Glowicki was also selected in the 2017 draft when he was picked by the Chicago Cubs in the 10th round. The senior closer was one of the highest relief pitchers selected in the 2017 draft.
Another pitcher that flourished under the tutelage of McDevitt was Brett Schulze. The righthander was plugged into the rotation as the Saturday starter as a true freshman. Schulze posted a 4-3 record while striking out 58 batters, second most on the team. He was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week May 8 after striking out eight batters in seven innings versus Penn State.
