The junior set the school record and also broke the Big Ten meet record.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota cross country program raced to a fifth and 11th-place finish at the Big Ten Cross Country Championships in Champaign, Ill., at the Illini Orange and Blue Golf Course on Friday. Ali Weimer was Minnesota's top finisher, crossing the finish line in third in the women's 6K earning a bronze medal in a school-record time of 19:25.0.

On a relatively flat cross country course Weimer cleared Bethany Hasz' old program record by 11 seconds (19:36.4) while also running one second faster than the previous Big Ten Championship record (Leah O'Connor, Michigan St., 19:26.3). Weimer's third-place finish came behind a pair of Oregon runners with Silan Ayyildiz winning the race in a time of 19:13.6 with teammate Maddy Elmore behind her at 19:14.6 for silver. Additionally, freshman Isabelle Schmitz earned Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors as the third-highest placing freshman in the competition.

The women's championship was claimed by No. 17 Oregon who won with a team score of 33 with No. 2 Washington well behind for the runner-up finish at 60 team points. No. 11 Wisconsin was third (133) with No. 24 Penn State in fourth (134) and No. 22 Minnesota came in fifth with 146 team points.

Graduate transfer Lucas Florsheim was Minnesota's top finisher for the first time this season, coming in at 34th overall. Florsheim's time of 23:26.7 on the flat Illini Blue and Orange Course propelled the first-year Gopher all the way into a tie with Alec Basten for the fastest 8K times in school history. The time for Florsheim is the fastest by a Gopher since 2021 (Basten).

The men's championship was individually won by Bob Liking of Wisconsin in a time of 22:47.3, winning the race by nearly eight seconds over UCLA's Michael Mireles (22:55.0). No. 9 Wisconsin also won the team title with 46 points, beating No. 18 Washington and No. 25 Oregon, who both finished with 58 team points.

Beyond Weimer's bronze-medal finish on the women's side, Emma Atkinson came in as the second runner for the Maroon and Gold. Atkinson's 24th-place finish in 19:55.5 was just shy of an All-Big Ten performance (top 20), but still goes down as a lifetime best time and the first time she has broke the 20-minute barrier. Atkinson's time matches Stephanie Price's time from 2010 as the sixth-fastest in program history. After Atkinson, Minnesota's top five included Erin Reidy (20:08.5), Izzy Roemer (20:10.5) and Isabelle Schmitz (20:12.6).

After Florsheim's break out performance it was redshirt freshman Aidan Jones that came across the line second for the Maroon and Gold. Jones' time of 23:38.1 goes down as the No. 8 time in school history, just ahead of Chris Romobough's 23:39.7 in 2007. After Jones, Minnesota's top five consisted of Emmet Anderson (24:03.6), Dan VanAcker (24:06.8) and Noah Kohut-Jackson (24:22.8).
