Men and Women Both Finish Seventh at Big Ten Championships

Aidan Jones and Isabelle Schmitz were the top individual finishers for Minnesota.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Both the men and women of the University of Minnesota cross country programs finished in seventh at the 2025 Big Ten Cross Country Championships in East Lansing, Mich., at Forest Akers East Golf Course on Friday morning. The Maroon and Gold's top individual finishers were Aidan Jones (26th, 24:04.2) and Isabelle Schmitz (23rd, 20:34.0).
Diana Cherotich of No. 4 Oregon won the women's 6K Championship race in a time of 19:31.3, while the Ducks won the team title with 18 points. The men's champion at Big Tens was No. 10 Oregon's Abdel Laadjel in an 8K time of 23:11.6. Oregon claimed the men's team title with 36 points while Minnesota finished with 187 points in seventh place.
The Minnesota men kicked off the competition at 9:35 a.m. CT, with Jones crossing first in 26th place, 22 spots better than a season ago in Illinois. Earning Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors was Aloysius Franzen, who finished second among the Gophers and 29th overall in a lifetime-best time of 24:09.8. Franzen earned the All-Freshman Team distinction by being one of the top five freshmen, or redshirt freshmen, in East Lansing.
Fellow redshirt freshman Sam Scott was just behind Franzen in a time of 24:14.0 to finish third among Minnesota's lineup, seventh among all freshmen in the field and 32nd overall. Redshirt senior Leo Goodman saved his best 8K for his final Big Ten Championships competition, finishing in a lifetime best 8K time of 24:25.6 to come in personal best Big Ten finish of 51st overall. Emmett Gerres rounded out the Gopher lineup with a time of 24:33.6 to come in 59th.
Schmitz, a Hutchinson, Minn., native, improved 19 spots from her freshman season on the women's side to pace the Maroon and Gold and finish 23rd overall in a time of 20:34.0. Behind Schmitz was Nadia Phillips' 20:38.5 to place 27th overall, an incredible 59 spots better than a season ago at the same Big Ten competition.
Izzy Roemer was 51st overall for the Golden Gophers in a time of 21:05.1, while Zoie Dundon picked off seven runners in the final 1000m to finish 57th in a time of 21:13.7. Taylor Isabel rounded out the Minnesota scoring lineup in 60th, clocking a 21:17.6.

NCAA championship season lies ahead for the Maroon and Gold, as both the men's and women's teams will head to Stillwater, Okla., on Fri., Nov. 14 for the NCAA Midwest Regional. Oklahoma State will play host to the Regional Championship, and will hold both races on the Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course with races starting at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. CT.
