11/15/2024 1:38:00 PM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country

The NCAA Cross Country Championships will be held in Madison, Wis., on Nov. 23.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota women's cross country team is returning to the NCAA Championships after the team punched an automatic ticket to Madison with a second-place team finish in Peoria, Ill., at Newman Golf Course on late Friday morning. Junior Ali Weimer once again paced the Gophers, earning a second place individual finish to help Minnesota advance with 76 team points.

The 'U' will send its women's program to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2021 and for the ninth time in 12 years under cross country head coach Sarah Hopkins. Weimer's runner-up finish came in the time of 19:48.85, posting Minnesota's best individual finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional since 2013 when Molly Kayfes was the runner-up for the Maroon and Gold in Ames, Iowa.

Each top 25 individual finisher in Peoria, Ill. earned All-Region recognition; Minnesota posted four All-Region finishers on the women's side. Emma Atkinson posted her second career All-Region performance by finishing 11th overall in a time of 20:13.86. Atkinson's 11th-place finish is a career best for the graduate student, besting her 21st overall finish back in 2022.

In 15th overall was true freshman Isabelle Schmitz, dropping an impressive run of 20:17.69. Schmitz's 15th-place finish is the best by a Gopher true freshman at the Midwest Regional since Ali Weimer was 12th overall in 2022. Just behind Schmitz was redshirt sophomore Izzy Roemer in 16th overall. In Roemer's first appearance at the NCAA Midwest Regional she dropped a time of 20:18.09, earning an All-Region distinction. Minnesota's scoring lineup was rounded out by Erin Reidy in 32nd, clocking a 20:37.18.

Minnesota's 76 team points were second overall while Oklahoma State's 61 earned the Cowgirls the team title. Third was Big Ten foe Northwestern with 103 points with Iowa State (139 points) and Nebraska (181) rounding out the top five.

The men's program finished 10th overall among the 29 men's teams that competed on Friday afternoon. Redshirt freshman Aidan Jones was the best individual finisher for the men, clocking a 10K time of 30:12.44 to finish 29th, narrowly missing out on All-Region honors.

The top five for Minnesota's men were rounded out by Emmet Anderson (46th, 30:37.0), Lucas Florsheim (47th, 30:37.05), Noah Kohut-Jackson (77th, 31:02.56) and Leo Goodman (91st, 31:08.68).
