Shannon Sets Record as Gophers Fall

Bloomington, Ind. - The University of Minnesota fell to Northwestern 11-7 Friday in their second game of the Big Ten Tournament.

The Maroon and Gold struck first right away in the top of the first inning. Terrin Vavra drew a one-out walk the came around to score when Micah Coffey hit his fourth home run of the season to right field.

Toby Hanson tacked on another run in the bottom top of the fourth inning when he hit a solo home run to deep right field. It was his fifth home run of the season.

Coffey reached base with a single to center field in the top of the sixth inning which was followed by a single from Hanson. Coffey ended up scoring on a Jordan Smith single. A Matt Stemper fielder's choice advanced Hanson to third base then both runners scored on a Luke Pettersen double to left field.

Northwestern answered back with two runs to take the lead but that was short lived. Alex Boxwell hit a one-out, 1-0 pitch to deep center field in the top of the seventh inning for his sixth home run of the season to tie the game 7-7.

Northwestern would score four runs in the next two innings to take the victory.

Brett Schulze started on the mound for the Maroon and Gold. The freshman tossed one inning where he allowed four runs on two hits while striking out one batter.

Tyler Hanson took over Schulze for four inning, allowing one earned run on two hits. He struck out one batter before giving away to Tim Shannon. The submarine threw one inning of one run ball while giving up two hits and recording one strikeout.

Fred Manke faced two batters, walking one and allowing a hit for the other. He was charged with two earned runs for his first loss of the season. Brian Glowicki pitched the final two innings for the Gophers. He allowed two earned runs on four hits and picked up two strikeouts.

Up Next
The Gophers will take on Indiana in an elimination game loosely scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. central start time or 40 minutes after the conclusion of the Nebraska/Indiana game if it runs longer than expected.

  • The Gophers recorded three home runs in the game.
  • Coffey was 3-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Hanson and Boxwell both had two hits each.
  • Shannon set the record for most appearances for a pitcher in a season with 29. The record originally belonged to Jason Karmann in 1994.
