Meyer Shines to Force Elimination Game

Bloomington, Ind. - The University of Minnesota defeated Iowa 9-3 Saturday behind a dominant pitching performance by Reggie Meyer.

The Gophers scored right away in the top of the first inning. Luke Pettersen drew a one-out walk then advanced to second base on a Micah Coffey single. Toby Hanson sent a 1-1 pitch up the middle of the infield to score Pettersen.

Kozicky led off the top of the third inning with an infield single then scored on a double off of the bat of Pettersen. He advanced to third on a Coffey single then scored on another Hanson single. A Stemper ground out advanced the two runners. Coffey then scored on a Jordan Smith single to center field. After a pitching change for Iowa, Eduardo Estrada, Jr. pinch hit for Troy Traxler and plated Hanson with a fielder's choice.

Eli Wilson started the top of the fourth inning with an infield single then advanced to second base on a single from Kozicky. An error by the Iowa pitcher allowed Wilson to score on a Pettersen at-bat. A Coffey sacrifice fly to left field allowed Kozicky to score then Pettersen advanced to third base on a passed ball. Hanson capped off the scoring in the inning with another single that scored Pettersen.
The Maroon and Gold tacked on another run in the top of the sixth inning. Pettersen reached base again with a leadoff double to right field. He then scored when Coffey singled up the middle of the infield.

Meyer started on the mound for the Gophers and pitched eight innings. He allowed three earned runs, two of which were in the first inning, on four hits. He only walked two batters while striking out seven. Meyer tossed 122 pitches, 76 which were strikes. He is now 5-1 on the season.

Jackson Rose tossed the final inning of the game where he didn't allow a hit and struck out two batters.

The Gophers will take on Iowa for a shot to play in the Big Ten Tournament Championship 40 minutes after the conclusion of the Northwestern/Maryland game. The game will be live on the Big Ten Network.
