Kozicky Extends Streak as Gophers Fall Twice

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Minnesota fell in both games of their doubleheader Saturday to Illinois at Siebert Field.
The Gophers are now 25-14 overall and 9-6 in the Big Ten after falling in the three-game conference series. Jordan Kozicky extended his on-base streak to 22 straight games with hits in both games.
Game 1 - Minnesota: 5 Illinois: 9
The Maroon and Gold struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Jordan Smith started things off with a one-out single to right field. He then advanced to second base on an Alex Boxwell ground out. Cole McDevitt then drove in Smith a double down the left field line.
Minnesota tacked on another four runs in the sixth inning after Illinois scored two runs in the fifth inning. Boxwell worked a one-out walk then advanced on a wild pitch. McDevitt followed that with a walk then Luke Pettersen singled through the right side. The right fielder bobbled the ball allowing Boxwell to score and McDevitt to advance to third base.
Kozicky then doubled to right field scoring McDevitt. Pettersen scored on a Terrin Vavra fielder's choice then Kozicky scored on a Micah Coffey sacrifice fly to right field.
The Fighting Illini scored seven runs in the top of the ninth inning to clinch the victory.
Brett Schulze started on the mound for the Gophers and tossed six innings. The freshman allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out seven batters. The seven strikeouts sets a career high for the righty.
Tyler Hanson was the first pitcher out of the bullpen and he pitched 2.1 innings. He gave up two earned runs on three hits and recorded one strikeout. Next was Brian Glowicki who allowed four runs on two hits. Glowicki, who got stuck with the loss, was relieved by Tim Shannon who threw recorded the final two outs. He allowed one run on one hit and struck out two batters.
Game 2 - Minnesota: 1 Illinois: 14
The lone Minnesota run came in the bottom of the third inning. Kozicky led off the inning with a single up the middle then advanced to second on a Smith walk. The bases were then filled when Coffey walked. Toby Hanson grounded into a double play but Kozicky scored. The inning ended with a Matt Stemper fly out to right field.
Toby Anderson started game two for the Maroon and Gold. He pitched two innings where he allowed five earned runs on four hits. The senior picked up the loss and is now 4-5 on the season.
Reggie Meyer took over for Anderson and surrendered three earned runs on two hits in 0.1 innings. Next out of the bullpen was Nick Lackney who tossed 2.1 innings of four hit ball. He gave up three runs and struck out three batters.
Following Lackney was Fred Manke who pitched 2.1 innings. He struck out three batters, one off from a career high, and did not give up a hit or a walk. Alex Farley threw one inning where he struck out two batters and allowed only one hit. Jackson Rose pitched the final inning for the Gophers where he struck out one batter and didn't allow a hit.

Minnesota will host Georgia State for a two-game series beginning on Tuesday. The first game of the series will be broadcast on Big Ten Network.
