Minnesota Takes Down Georgia State 9-1

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Minnesota won the first game of a two-game series Tuesday against Georgia State 9-1.
The Gophers improve to 26-14 overall on the season with the victory.
Minnesota took the lead in the bottom of the third inning beginning when Jordan Smith led off with a walk. Cole McDevitt advanced Smith with a sac bunt then Luke Pettersen walked to put runners on first and second for Jordan Kozicky. The freshman ended up reaching on an infield single, filling the bases for Eli Wilson. The catcher looped a single to right field which scored both Smith and Pettersen. Kozicky would score on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
In the fourth inning, Pettersen began things with a walk then Kozicky singled to left field to advance him to second base. Wilson reached on an error and Pettersen scored. Another error allowed Micah Coffey to reach base and allowed Kozicky to score who was on third base. Toby Hanson drove in his 36th RBI of the season with a single through the right side to make it 6-1 in favor of Minnesota. Smith capped off the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Coffey.
Minnesota would finish their scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning with two runs. Pettersen scored on a Wilson sacrifice fly then Kozicky would score again, this time on a single off the bat of Coffey.
Nolan Burchill started on the mound for the Maroon and Gold. The freshman threw 1.1 inning where he allowed just one hit and struck out one batter. Toby Anderson took over for Burchill and tossed 2.2 innings. He allowed one earned run on two hits while striking out three batters en route to his fifth win of the season.
Fred Manke then relieve Anderson and pitched for three innings. He allowed only hit and struck out five batters, a new career high for strikeouts in a game. Jake Stevenson finished the final two innings for the Gophers where he gave up one hit and struck out one batter.

The two teams will play the final game of the two-game series tomorrow at Siebert Field with a 6:30 start time.
