Vavra Homers as Gophers Fall to Nebraska

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Minnesota recorded only their third conference loss Friday as they fell 5-3 to Nebraska at Siebert Field.
Minnesota is now 22-11 overall and 7-3 in the Big Ten following the defeat.
Lucas Gilbreath started on the mound for the Gophers and pitched six innings. He struck out seven batters but gave up three earned runs on three hits.
Tyler Hanson came in for relief of Gilbreath and tossed 1.1 innings where he allowed two runs on two hits. The senior struck out two batters but was tagged with the loss and is now 3-3 on the season.
Brian Glowicki took over for Hanson and threw 0.2 innings allowing two hits and striking out one batter. Tim Shannon tossed the final inning for the Gophers. The senior submariner allowed only one hit.
Nebraska struck first with one run in the top of the first inning but the Maroon and Gold tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second. Matt Stemper led off the inning with a double off of the left field wall then advanced to third base on a Jordan Smith ground out. Jordan Kozicky drove the senior in with a ground out to the Cornhusker second baseman.
Minnesota took the lead with a two-run third inning. Ben Mezzenga started it off with a one-out single through the left side before Terrin Vavra hit a home run over the right field fence, his second of the season.
Nebraska tied the game in the top of the fifth inning with two runs then took the lead in the top of the eighth inning with another two-run inning.

The Gophers look to even the series at Siebert Field tomorrow with a 2 p.m. tilt. Brett Schulze takes the mound for the Maroon and Gold.
Game Notes
- Vavra hit his second home run of the season along with driving in his ninth and tenth RBIs of the season.
- Gilbreath now has fifty seven strike outs on the season.
- Mezzenga was 2-3 with a double and one run scored.
