Gophers Even Series With Nebraska

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Minnesota evened the series with Nebraska with a 5-3 victory at Siebert Field Saturday afternoon in front of a crowd of 1,183.

The Gophers improved to 23-11 overall and 8-3 in the Big Ten.

Minnesota struck in the bottom of the first inning when Jordan Kozicky led off the inning with a single to left field. The redshirt freshman then advanced on a Terrin Vavra bunt single and scored when Toby Hanson singled up the middle of the field for the lead.

Nebraska answered back with a run in the top of the second inning but Minnesota pushed back with two of their own runs in the bottom half of the inning. Luke Pettersen led off with a single to left field then advanced to second on a Ben Mezzenga bunt single.

Kozicky walked to fill the bases for Vavra. The sophomore sent a 2-0 pitch out to right field but Pettersen tagged up and scored as the other runners also advanced a base. Next Micah Coffey grounded out to the shortstop but Mezzenga scored to make it 3-1 in favor of the Maroon and Gold.

After one more Cornhusker run, Minnesota tacked on their final two runs in the third inning. Matt Stemper led off the inning with a walk then after a Nebraska pitching change, Jordan Smith smashed a two-run home run off the scoreboard in right field.

Brett Schulze started on the bump for the Maroon and Gold. He tossed four inning where he allowed three runs on five hits while striking out four batters. Reggie Meyer took over for Schulze and threw 3.2 innings. The righty only allowed two hits and struck out two batters en route to his second win of the season.

Nick Lackney faced two batters, walking one and striking out the other. Brian Glowicki closed out the game for Minnesota, striking out two batters to pick up his 13th save of the season.

The rubber game between the Gophers and the Cornhuskers is scheduled for a 1 p.m. tilt tomorrow at Siebert Field. Toby Anderson will take the mound for Minnesota.

Game Notes

  • Hanson leads the team with 26 RBIs and Coffey is second with 25 RBI.
  • Smith hit his fifth home run of the season, tied for most with Boxwell, and now has 19 RBIs.
  • Meyer is 2-0 with 19 strikeouts.
