Wilson Leads Gophers Over Jackrabbits

Minneapolis, Minn. - The Golden Gophers' return to Siebert Field saw them pick up their 22nd victory of the season with a 5-2 win over South Dakota State.

Minnesota is now 22-10 overall and in first place in the Big Ten with a 7-2 conference record.

The Jackrabbits struck first with a solo- home run by Matt Johnson in the top of the first inning.
The Maroon and Gold tied it 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning when Eli Wilson singled, driving in Eduardo Estrada, Jr. who reached on a fielder's choice earlier.

The two teams traded runs in the third inning with Minnesota's coming when Luke Pettersen was hit by a pitch with the bases full.

The Gophers took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning with an Eli Wilson triple to center field. Matt Stemper and Pettersen scored when the South Dakota State center fielder missed judged a fly ball that bounced to the wall.

Toby Hanson added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning when he tripled down the right field line, scoring Riley Smith who was running for Micah Coffey.

Nolan Burchill started on the mound for Minnesota and pitched 2.1 innings where he allowed two runs on five hits while striking out one batter. Tyler Hanson came in relief for Burchill and threw 2.2 innings of no-hit ball and struck out three batters en route to his third victory of the season.

The next pitcher out of the Gopher bullpen was Nick Lackney who tossed 1.1 inning. He only allowed two hits and struck out two batters. Tim Shannon came in for 1.1 inning and didn't allow a hit.

Brian Glowicki converted his 12th save of the season after allowing one hit in the ninth inning and struck one batter.

The Gophers will return to Big Ten conference play as they host the Nebraska Cornhuskers for a three-game series beginning Friday at Siebert Field.

Game Notes

  • Toby Hanson picked up his fourth triple of the season and leads the team with 25 RBIs.
  • Wilson was 3-4 with three RBIs and his first collegiate triple.
  • Tyler Hanson moves to 3-2 overall on the season.
