Gophers Streak Snapped By Hoosiers

Bloomington, Ind. - The University of Minnesota fell 13-12 to Indiana Saturday, only their first loss in the Big Ten this season.

The Gophers collected their 12 runs on 21 hits, there second game in a row of two or more hits. The Maroon and Gold are now 21-9 overall and 7-1 in the conference while the loss snapped the team's 12-game win streak.

Minnesota jumped out to an early 2-1 lead in the first inning when Alex Boxwell led the game off with a home run to right center field. This is the second straight game where Boxwell has led off with a home run. The second run came off of a double by Micah Coffey to left center field that scored Terrin Vavra who singled earlier in the inning.

The Golden Gophers tacked on another run in the top of the second inning when Cole McDevitt singled through the left side of the infield allowing Jordan Kozicky to score after a single and a steal.

With an infield hit to the hole at deep shortstop in the third inning, McDevitt scored Matt Stemper to make it 4-2 Minnesota. The Hoosiers would then tie it 4-4 with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

Stemper would homer to center field in the top of the fourth inning with Toby Hanson on base to make it 6-4 in Minnesota's favor. Jordan Smith followed that with a walk then Kozicky launched his first collegiate home run to left field to make the lead 8-4.

Indiana scored nine runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning, Minnesota would start to chip away at their lead in the sixth inning. Luke Pettersen drove in Kozicky with a double to left center field who reached base with a single.

The Maroon and Gold added three more runs in the top of the seventh inning. The scoring started when Riley Smith walked then scored on a double off of the bat of Coffey. He was then brought in on a Stemper single. After a Jordan Smith walk, Kozicky picked up another RBI by singling to left field, driving in Stemper to make it a one-run game.

The Gophers would threaten in the top of the eighth inning with runners on first and second base but Indiana turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning and the threat.

Brett Schulze started on the mound for the Maroon and Gold and tossed 2.2 innings where he allowed four runs on nine hits. He was then relieved by Nick Lackney who pitched 1.1 inning. He gave up five runs on four hits while striking out three batters and picking up the loss, his first of the season.

Tim Shannon came in for 2.0 innings where he allowed four runs on four hits. The senior struck out three batters before giving away to Tyler Hanson for the final two innings. Hanson only allowed one hit and struck out one batter.

The two teams will play the rubber match tomorrow with first pitched scheduled for 12:05 p.m. central time.

  • Kozicky recorded his first collegiate steal and home run while going 5-5 with three RBIs and scoring three runs.
  • Stemper was 3-6 with one home run, three RBIs and three runs scored.
  • Coffey was 3-6 with two doubles, two RBIs and one run scored.
  • 10 Gophers recorded hits with six of them picking up two or more hits.
  • This was Boxwell's fifth home run of the season.
