Gophers Split Friday Doubleheader With Washington at Home

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of Minnesota baseball team opened up their Big Ten conference weekend at home with a doubleheader this afternoon against the University of Washington, splitting the back-to-back games with the Huskies and falling in game one 11-7 before taking game two 12-6.

 

GAME 1 | Washington 11, Minnesota 7

 

Cole Selvig got the ball to start for Minnesota and was credited with the loss. Tyler Hemmesch was a bright spot for the Golden Gophers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing 2.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts.

 

Bello went 2-for-3 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with a pair of RBIs. Jack Spanier added to Bello's power-hitting performance by going 3 for 4 with a triple, a home run and three RBIs. Davis Hamilton also helped out for the Golden Gophers, going 0-for-4 with two RBIs.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

 

Trailing 3-0, the Gophers first put runs on the board in the third inning with a solo home run down the left field line off the bat of Jack Bello.

 

The Huskies expanded their lead to 11-1 before the Gophers offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the fifth. Minnesota scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer off the bat of Jack Spanier to cut the Husky lead to 11-4.

 

Minnesota held the Huskies off the scoreboard before narrowing the gap to 11-6 in the seventh, scoring two runs on another solo home run from Bello and a sacrifice fly out to center field from Davis Hamilton.

 

The Gophers were able to add one more run on an RBI groundout from Hamilton in the ninth, but were unable to close the gap any further before falling in game one, 11-7.

» Minnesota got a two-homer day from Jack Bello.

GAME 2 | Minnesota 12, Washington 6

 

Brandon Jaenke got the win out of the bullpen for Minnesota, going 3.1 innings while striking out three. Caden Capomaccio also pitched well, going 1.2 shutout innings without allowing a hit and striking out one.

 

Mosh went 1-for-2 at the plate with a double and a walk in addition to his three RBIs and Akin put together a 2-for-2 day with a double and his first career home run, supplementing his three RBI performance for the Golden Gophers. Ty Allen compiled a standout day at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with a home run, a walk and two RBIs.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

 

The Gophers got on the board first in the beginning frame, tallying the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly out to center by Weber Neels.

 

The Huskies were able to even things up before Minnesota tallied a pair of sacrifice hits from Jackson Akin and Jack Mosh in the second to move up to a 3-1 lead.

 

A Husky solo home run and a Gopher solo home run from Neels in the third kept the Minnesota advantage at two after the first three innings of the game.

 

Washington closed the lead yet again in the fourth, but an RBI double from Mosh brought things back to a two run lead at 5-3.

 

The Gophers matched another Husky run in the fifth with a pair of runs in the sixth, both coming on RBI groundouts from Mosh and Jack Spanier.

 

Minnesota held Washington off the board before putting up a five run seventh inning, coming on an RBI double from Sutherland and a pair of two run home runs from Ty Allen and Akin out to left center field.

 

The Huskies put up two more runs in the eighth, but were unable to close the gap even further before the end to give the Gophers the game two victory, 12-6.
