Four Gophers boats advance to Sunday's Grand Finals
INDIANAPOLIS - The Minnesota rowing team battled all morning for a strong performance during day one of competition Saturday at the 2025 Big Ten Conference Rowing Championships in Indianapolis, Ind.
Facing windy conditions on the waters at Eagle Creek Park, the Golden Gophers saw four of their seven boats finish in the top three of their respective heats, which earned an automatic spot in the Grand Finals set for Sunday morning live on Big Ten Network.
In the second race of the regatta Saturday, the Maroon and Gold's Second Varsity Eight entered as the eighth seed and narrowly edged Indiana and Michigan State by less than two seconds. Their time of 6:48.071 resulted in a second-place effort in the heat, the highest finish of the day for Minnesota.
As they have done all season long, the First Varsity Four put together another impressive performance on the water and raced to third place. The 2,000-meter course was covered in 7:29.691 to qualify the crew for Sunday's Grand Finals.
The Second Varsity Four made it three-straight, top-three races for the Gophers as the boat fought through increasing surface winds to notch its spot in the Grand Finals behind a time of 7:37.525.
Getting a taste of its first conference championship, the First Novice Eight/Third Varsity Eight boat from the Maroon and Gold surged as a group to surpass UCLA over the final 200 meters and secure the third-place effort in a time of 7:08.023.

Coach Strodel's Comments
"Our goal today was to secure spots in the grand final," Head Coach Alicea Strodel said. "This was a new format for the championship with the addition of three schools. Four of our boats will be competing in the grand final tomorrow. The remaining three boats are going to the petites with the fastest qualifying times in their groups. Tomorrow is the true test, but I believe in our training and our athletes. Go Gophs!"
