Pair of Petite Finals wins for 'U'

INDIANAPOLIS - The Golden Gophers ended the 2025 Big Ten Conference Rowing Championships in seventh place Sunday from the Indianapolis Rowing Center in Indianapolis, Ind. The First Varsity Four crew turned in Minnesota's highest finish of the day as it raced to fifth in the Grand Finals.

It was a dominating start to the morning at Eagle Creek Park for the Maroon and Gold's Second Novice Eight/Fourth Varsity Eight. The crew had a clean start and built an open-water lead early in the race on the way to a Petite Finals victory in a time of 6:57.375, more than 10 seconds ahead of the next finishers, Iowa and Wisconsin.

Originally seeded 10th, the First Novice Eight/Third Varsity Eight boat reached the Grand Finals where it turned in a sixth-place performance. The Third Varsity Four crew followed by winning the Petite Finals, leading from start to finish on the 2,000-meter course and cruised to a 14-second win before the Second Varsity Four ended the Grand Finals in sixth.

The best performance of the championships for Minnesota came in the First Varsity Four race as the crew posted a time of 7:06.390 to place fifth. The Gophers' Second Varsity Eight battled to finish sixth in the Grand Finals that vaulted the team score before the First Varsity Eight boat capped the regatta, narrowly edging Wisconsin by less than one second, to place second in the Petite Finals.

Following the action on the water, Minnesota junior captain Manon Field was named to the All-Big Ten First Team, while sophomore Josefine Freltoft landed on the All-Big Ten Second Team. Sophomore Sophia Pirigyi earned the B1G Sportsmanship Award during the final ceremony at Eagle Creek Park.

Coach Strodel's Comments
"Today was a good team effort and as a result we had a competitive regatta," Head Coach Alicea Strodel said. "Our team depth really carried us and our athletes took a lot of pride in their racing. Thank you to all the seniors that have helped push Gopher Rowing forward and are leaving the team in a better place than they found it."
