Gophers part of 11-team field seeking league title

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota rowing team travels to Indianapolis, Ind., for the 2025 Big Ten Championships May 17-18 from the Indianapolis Rowing Center at Eagle Creek Park. The first of seven races for the Maroon and Gold get underway at 8 a.m. (CT) Saturday morning, streaming live on B1G+, while Sunday's finals will air live on the Big Ten Network and the FOX Sports app.

The seven boat classes will be split into two heats, featuring five and six crews, to get the competition started on Saturday and the top three finishers from each heat will advance to Sunday's Grand Finals. The remaining five boats will compete in the Petite Finals.

UPDATE: With potential inclement weather coming in, Saturday's heats will be starting at 7 a.m. (CT) and the schedule is also being inverted.

From A Captain's Perspective
"We are very excited to take on the Big Ten the next two days," junior captain Manon Field said. "We have spent the last few weeks making important changes, taking lots of strokes, and preparing for this moment. Every boat this weekend is united with a common mission; we are ready to lay it all out on the course and make it happen!"

Last Time on the Water
The Third Varsity Four crew earned another win for the Golden Gophers before the Second Novice Eight was victorious in the regatta's final race, closing the Big Ten Invitational from Sarasota, Fla. Competing among the nation's top programs, where 13 ranked teams took to the water at Nathan Benderson Park, Minnesota showcased its strong depth in the fours on the final day. The Third Varsity Four boat ended the weekend by winning for the second-straight session, this time with a 25-second victory over B1G rivals Wisconsin and Iowa. In the final race, Minnesota's Second Novice Eight boat put on a show and surged through the 2,000-meter battle to pick up the victory by 10 seconds. The Gophers also claimed wins from their Third Varsity Four and First Varsity Four boats during the afternoon session on the opening day of competition at the B1G Invitational.

Collecting a B1G Weekly Honor
For their efforts at the Big 12/Big Ten Double Duel, the Gophers' First Varsity Four crew of Annika Maiorino (cox), Jaden Deutscher, Nuala Macfarlane, Sophia Pirigyi, and Emily Franke was recognized by the Big Ten Conference on April 15 as a B1G Boat of the Week. Minnesota turned in a commanding performance in Kansas City, Kan., delivering back-to-back statement wins. The boat opened the regatta Friday night with a resounding 29-second victory over San Diego and followed up Saturday morning with an even more decisive performance, cruising to a 34-second win over host Kansas.

Gophers Announce Captains for 2024-25
The Gophers announced their trio of captains for the 2024-25 season, including a returning leader and two new captains. Senior Tallulah Sweet (St. Paul, Minn.) is back for her second season leading Minnesota rowing and is joined on the leadership group by junior Manon Field (Hudson, Wis.) and senior Ella Saunders (North Liberty, Iowa).

Academic Excellence from the Gophers
Minnesota rowing was awarded the 2023-24 Gladys Brooks Commitment to Academic Excellence Award from the Lindahl Academic Center. The Gophers showcased academic excellence and, thanks to a 3.48 grade point average over the fall, maintained a 3.44 GPA or higher in each of the last eight semesters. Last year, the program tied a program record when 14 student-athletes were named Collegiate Rowing Coaching Association (CRCA) Scholar Athletes. Minnesota also saw Annie Moen earn a spot on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America Second Team, while 14 were named to the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar list and 31 landed on the Academic All-Big Ten Team.
