Gophers Set to Row at Sunday's Rivanna Romp in Virginia

11/8/2025 3:30:00 PM | Rowing

Final fall outing for 'U' rowers

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota rowing team closes its fall portion of the schedule Sunday when it travels to Virginia for the annual Rivanna Romp in Earlysville, Va.

The regatta gets underway at 10 a.m. (CT) along the 4,000-meter course at the Rivanna Reservoir. The Varsity Eights are the first crews to hit the water followed by the Varsity Fours around 11:45 p.m. (CT). Boats will launch one at a time, approximately 10-15 seconds apart, in a time trial to determine the winners.

The Golden Gophers will face competitors from Georgetown, Navy, North Carolina, Old Dominion, and the host Cavaliers.

Admission is free to the public and parking is available at the Thomas Temple Allan Boathouse on the west bank of the Rivanna Reservoir. The boathouse is the closest point where spectators can see the action.

From A Captain's Perspective
"Traveling with the team is always such an exciting experience, from being able to race against teams and showing others the hard work we have been putting in on the water at home, to seeing the Gopher pride from people we meet in the airport just makes all the hard days worth it. We are excited to show up and show out this weekend," Minnesota senior captain Nuala Macfarlane said.

Last Time on the Water
The Gophers kicked off their fall season Oct. 4 with a strong showing on home waters during the 45th Annual Head of the Mississippi Regatta, earning multiple event victories and showcasing impressive depth across all boats. The Maroon and Gold swept the top four spots in the Women's Collegiate 4+ with the first three finishers all covering the nearly three-mile course along the Mississippi River in under 18 minutes. Minnesota's freshmen impressed during their collegiate debut, placing second and third in the Women's Collegiate Freshman 8+ to round out a successful opening weekend.

Returning B1G Honorees
A season ago, Manon Field was named to the All-Big Ten First Team, while Josefine Freltoft landed on the All-Big Ten Second Team and both award winners have returned to campus for the Maroon and Gold in 2025-26. Sophia Pirigyi earned the B1G Sportsmanship Award during the final ceremony at Eagle Creek Park at the B1G Championship and now begins her junior campaign at Minnesota.

Collecting a B1G Weekly Honor
For their efforts at last spring's Big 12/Big Ten Double Duel, the Gophers' First Varsity Four crew of Annika Maiorino (cox), Jaden Deutscher, Nuala Macfarlane, Sophia Pirigyi, and Emily Franke was recognized by the Big Ten Conference on April 15 as a B1G Boat of the Week. Minnesota turned in a commanding performance in Kansas City, Kan., delivering back-to-back statement wins. The boat opened the regatta Friday night with a resounding 29-second victory over San Diego and followed up Saturday morning with an even more decisive performance, cruising to a 34-second win over host Kansas.

Gophers' Captains Named for 2025-26
The Gophers announced their three captains for the 2025-26 season, including a returning leader and two new captains. Senior Manon Field (Hudson, Wis.) is back for her second year in the leadership group and is joined this year by junior Josefine Freltoft (Copenhagen, Denmark) and senior Nuala Macfarlane. The three veterans on the Minnesota roster will be critical to guide the program for the season.
