Gophers Split Series With Georgia State

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Minnesota split a two-game series with Georgia State Wednesday as they fell 7-5.

The Gophers fall to 26-15 overall on the season and are 9-6 in Big Ten play.

Minnesota was down 2-0 heading into the fourth inning before scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Riley Smith led off with a walk then advanced to second base when Micah Coffey singled through the right side of the infield. A Toby Hanson sacrifice bunt advanced the runners to second and third.

Matt Stemper scored Smith on a ground ball to the third baseman. Stemper was out on the play but Smith was able to score as the first baseman did not get throw to the plate in time. Next Jordan Smith walked to put runners on first and second for Cole McDevitt. The catcher laced a 3-2 pitch to the left field corner, scoring both Coffey and Smith giving Minnesota a 3-2 lead.

The Panthers added one more run in the top of the fifth inning but the Maroon and Gold answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Kozicky led off with a single up the middle which was followed by a bunt single off of the bat of R. Smith. The two moved up one base each on a wild pitch. Coffey brought in Kozicky with a sacrifice fly to center field then R. Smith scored on a Toby Hanson single.

Georgia State scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game 5-5 then scored runs in the seventh and ninth innings to get the win.

Reggie Meyer started on the mound and did not allow an earned run in two innings. He allowed three hits and struck out two batters. Nick Lackney relieved Meyer and tossed two innings where he allowed one earned run on three hits.

Jackson Rose then came in and allowed one run on one hit. Tim Shannon tossed two innings where he gave up two runs on three hits. The senior recorded two strikeouts. Tyler Hanson threw the final three innings for the Gophers and allowed two runs on four hits. The right hander struck out three batters but was tagged with his fifth loss of the season.

Minnesota will head to Pennsylvania to face Penn State for three conference games beginning on Friday.

  • With his one hit, Kozicky extended his on-base streak to 24 consecutive games.
  • Hanson drove in his team leading 37th run.
  • McDevitt now has 18 RBIs on the season.
