Gophers Hit Two Home Runs in Loss to Bears

Minneapolis, Minn. ââ'¬" The University of Minnesota fell to Missouri State 7-2 Saturday at U.S. Bank Stadium to put their record at 8-5.
This was only the fourth home loss for the Gophers, they are 7-4 at U.S. Bank Stadium with one game left.
Freshman Brett Schulze started on the mound for Minnesota and threw 5.1 innings. The righty allowed five earned runs on four hits and picked up his second loss of the season. Schulze did record five strikeouts to bump his season total up to 15 batters sent down.
Nick Lackney took over for Schulze in the sixth inning where he ended up walking four batters and allowed one earned run in 0.1 innings. Next out of the bullpen for the Maroon and Gold was Tim Shannon who tossed 2.1 innings of three-hit ball. He struck out one batter and allowed one earned run.
Jackson Rose took over for the final inning of play and allowed one hit. The single ended up turning into a double play with the next batter.
Minnesota collected two runs on four hits. The first run came in the bottom of the second inning when Micah Coffey tied the game 1-1 with a solo home run to centerfield. The second run was also a solo home run, this time off of the bat of Matt Stemper in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Minnesota and Missouri State will play the rubber game of the three-game series tomorrow at U.S. Bank Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. You can follow the action this year by following the Gophers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Game Notes
- Jordan Kozicky saw his first collegiate action in the field during the game where he recorded a putout and an assist.
- Shannon now has a 3.38 ERA in 10.2 innings pitched out of the bullpen. He also has seven strikeouts on the season.
- The home run by Coffey was his first of the season and eighth of his career.
- Stemper's home run tied him for most on the team with two this season. It was his sixth career dinger.
- As a team the Gophers have six total home runs.
- Coffey leads the team with 13 RBIs while Stemper is second with 10.
- Alex Boxwell extended his hitting streak to five games with a single.
