Minnesota battled, but was unable to find a breakthrough in a 4-3 defeat at Georgia State on Saturday in 10 innings. The Gophers (6-3) collected 10 hits from seven different sources in the second game of the series.

Austin Athmann and Terrin Vavra led the charge at the plate, each going 3-for-5. The trio of Matt Fiedler, Matt Stemper and Athmann combined for the three RBI hits on the afternoon.

On the mound, Dalton Sawyer got the start and went 5.0 innings, scattering three hits and surrendering three runs, while notching three strikeouts.

Minnesota scored in the first inning for the third-straight game after back-to-back singles from Dan Motl and Vavra when Fiedler reached on a fielder's choice to second base.

The Panthers (6-4) went down in order in the first, but mounted a three-run second inning to take the lead. Georgia State got a two-out, bases-clearing double with three on to jump on top.

Sawyer got out of the jam and did not allow a single hit through his exit in the sixth frame. In the sixth, a sacrifice fly from Stemper scored Athmann, who led off the stanza with a single and was advanced to third on a double from Micah Coffey.

Tim Shannon came on in relief of Sawyer and tossed the next 2.2 innings, allowing only one baserunner and striking out one.

The Gophers knotted the game up at 3-3 in the seventh on an RBI single down the chalk on the left-field line from Athmann, who brought in Motl with two outs.

In the eighth and ninth innings, both teams combined for just one hit and were not able to gain an advantage in the score line.

After Minnesota had a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 10th, Will Kilgore, who was responsible for all three RBI for Georgia State, stepped to the plate and launched a leadoff homer to end the game, 4-3.

In the game, Fiedler extended his on-base streak to nine games, while Motl pushed his hitting streak to eight contests.

The Gophers and Panthers resume their series in the rubber match tomorrow at 12 p.m. in Atlanta, Ga.
