Gophers Secure Series Victory With a Pair of Wins in Saturday Doubleheader

STATE COLLEGE, PA. – The University of Minnesota baseball team began their final weekend road trip of the regular season today with a doubleheader slate against Penn State University today, taking game one 5-4 and game two 5-3 from the Nittany Lions to secure the series win.

 

GAME 1 | Minnesota 5, Penn State 4

 

In addition to his eight strikeouts, Isaac Morton went five innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits and walking one for Minnesota. Joe Sperry also made an impact on the mound for the Golden Gophers, throwing two shutout innings while allowing one hit, with no walks and two strikeouts.

 

In the batter's box, the Golden Gophers were paced by Weber Neels, who went 2-for-5 on the day with a home run and three RBIs. Charlie Sutherland furnished a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with a walk. Easton Richter also helped out for Minnesota, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double and a walk.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

 

The Gophers got the scoring started early, putting three runs on the board in the top of the first inning on a three-run homer off the bat of Weber Neels.

 

The Gophers lost some of their lead before expanding on their advantage in the third inning after the Nittany Lions cut it to 3-1. Minnesota drove one run across on an RBI single off the bat of Jack Mosh, bringing the score to 4-1 in favor of the Gophers.

 

Penn State narrowed Minnesota's lead to 4-3 before the Gophers stretched the advantage to 5-3 in the seventh inning with an RBI sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Jack Bello.

 

Penn State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Minnesota was able to hold on for the 5-4 win to start off the doubleheader.

» Sutherland picked up three hits in the game for Minnesota.
» Morton struck out eight Nittany Lions hitters.

GAME 2 | Minnesota 5, Penn State 3

 

In addition to his five strikeouts, Will Whelan tossed two innings, giving up one run on one hit and walking none for Minnesota. Marcus Kruzan's five strikeouts came in addition to his four innings of two-run ball where he allowed five hits without surrendering a walk and tallied the win.

 

Offensively, the Golden Gophers were paced by Weber Neels, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a double, a walk and three RBIs. Brayden Hellum furnished a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. Charlie Sutherland also helped out for Minnesota, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

 

The Gophers were trailing 2-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board. Minnesota's offense started clicking and put up four runs in the frame on an RBI base hit from Jack Bello and a three RBI double from Weber Neels.

 

The Nittany Lions then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 4-3 before the Gophers expanded their advantage in the eighth. Minnesota scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Charlie Sutherland, bringing the score to 5-3 in favor of the Gophers. 

 

The score remained 5-3 for the rest of the game, as Minnesota held on for their second victory of the day and the series win.
