Gophers Drop Weekend Opener to No. 24 Nebraska, 12-7

5/14/2026 7:13:00 PM | Baseball

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of Minnesota baseball team kicked off their final weekend of the 2026 regular season this afternoon, falling to the No. 24 ranked University of Nebraska Cornhuskers 12-7 at Siebert Field in game one of a three game series.

Adam Urban was credited with the loss on the mound for Minnesota. Josh Kirchhoff was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going two shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out three.

Offensively, the Golden Gophers were led by Brayden Hellum, who went 2-for-5 on the day with a double, a triple and an RBI. Jack Spanier put together a standout performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Ty Allen also chipped in for Minnesota, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a walk and two RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Gophers were trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Minnesota pushed across two runs in the frame on an RBI single from Ty Allen and an RBI double from Brayden Hellum.

The Gophers then held the Cornhuskers scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Minnesota managed to push across two runs in the inning, coming on a bases loaded wild pitch and a bases loaded walk.

Minnesota's lead had disappeared once the sixth inning came around and turned into an 8-4 Nebraska advantage, when the Gophers cut that deficit to 8-6. Minnesota drove two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of Jack Spanier that brought home Jack Bello and Jack Mosh.

The Cornhuskers expanded their lead to 12-6 before the Minnesota offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the seventh. Brayden Hellum crossed home plate on an RBI groundout from Jack Bello, bringing the score to 12-7 in favor of Nebraska.

The Gophers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again to close out the ballgame.

GAME NOTES

» Minnesota's power output was led by Hellum, who compiled two extra base hits in the ballgame.
