Christian Martin broke the 110m hurdles program record twice on Saturday.
MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 3 University of Minnesota men's track and field team saw five different school-record performances go down at the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla. Between the men's and women's team the Golden Gophers put down 13 different program top 10 marks and times at James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track.
The school-record breaking tone was set by none other than three-time Big Ten hammer throw champion, Kostas Zaltos. The Greek national broke his own school record for the second time during the 2025 outdoor campaign, this time with a mark of 77.91m (255-7) on his second attempt. The lifetime best throw for the Gopher goes down as the No. 7 throw all-time among collegiates, according to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Zaltos, who made the European Championships final in 2024, now sits in a tie for fifth in the world this year according to WorldAthletics.org. Lastly, Zaltos' 77.91m (255-7) broke four-time Olympian Jud Logan's 39-year-old Percy Beard Track facility hammer throw record of 254-10 that was set back in 1986.
Zaltos' teammate, and fellow Greek, Angelos Mantzouranis was the hammer throw runner up in Gainesville with a lifetime best throw of 77.43m (254-0) on his third attempt which improved his already No. 2 spot on Minnesota's all-time list, but also puts him at No. 9 all-time at the NCAA level and tied for seventh in the world this year. The Greek duo became the first teammates to eclipse 77 meters in the same hammer throw competition in NCAA history and only the second time in Division I history that any two college throwers have gone over 77 meters at the same meet.
A day later on the track it was Christian Martin who put on a show in consecutive 110m hurdles races. The graduate student from North Plainfield, N.J., clocked a school record 13.61 (+0.7 m/s) in the prelims before dropping his own school record just a short time later to 13.49 (+0.7 m/s) in the final to finish third overall and second among the college competitors in the field. Martin's school record bested his current teammate Michael Buchanan's 2023 time of 13.66.
The school records came in waves during Saturday's competition with the men's 4x100m relay team setting a new program best between the prelims and finals of the 110m hurdles. The team of Zion Campbell, Kion Benjamin, Aaron Charles and Devin Augustine put down a preliminary time of 38.74, which was the second best time in school history, and then dropped that to 38.66 in the final on Saturday. The program-best time took down the 38.70 time that was set in 2023 by Carlon Hosten, Benjamin, Finn Schirmer and Augustine. The winning time for the quartet keeps the Maroon and Gold undefeated this season in the 4x100m relay.
The final program record at the Pepsi Florida Relays came via Hakeem Ford in the men's triple jump. The third-year Gopher broke through with an incredible four-foot lifetime best on his second attempt to finish as the top college finisher in the invitational triple jump field. Ford, a graduate of Minneapolis Southwest, smashed Keita Cline's 33-year-old school record of 16.18m (53-1) and now sits atop the Big Ten in the triple jump this season.
Minnesota's other program top 10 performances at the Pepsi Florida Relays included: Hadley Streit (Women's Hammer - 64.00m | 210-0, sixth all-time), Dyandra Gray (Women's 400m hurdles - 58.92, ninth all-time), Isaiah Schafer (Men's Shot Put - 19.87m | 65-2 1/4, fourth all-time), Precious Opinion (Men's Triple Jump - 15.53m | 50-11 1/2, ninth all-time), Zion Campbell (Men's 100m - 10.31, fifth all-time) and the women's 4x400m relay (Gray, Kitania Headley, Kendra Kelly and Laubenra Ben - 3:37.40).
Next week Minnesota will be spread around a trio of meets starting with the Brian Clay Multis meet in Azusa, Calif., from April 10-11. The Gophers will also compete at the Throwtown Romona World Invitational in Romona, Okla. from April 11-13 and at the Bethel Invitational in St. Paul, Minn., on April 12.
