Trio of Gophers to Compete at U20 World Championships

The track and field event is being held in Eugene, Ore., at Hayward Field.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota track and field program has three individuals in four different events at the U20 World Championships in Eugene, Ore., from August 5-9. Able Mills, Precious Opinion and Jayden Green will compete for their respective countries at Hayward Field. 

ABOUT THE 2026 U20 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2026 World Championships are being held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., with more than 1800 athletes from 147 member federations are entered. The meet at Hayward Field marks the first time the U.S. is hosting the event since 2014, when the old Hayward Field was the venue. The five-day event will be entirely aired on Peacock with live results also available via WorldAthletics.org.

MINNESOTA AT THE U20 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Minnesota's three student-athletes that are set to compete are Able Mills (Jamaica), Precious Opinion (Nigeria) and Jayden Green (Barbados). Mills will compete in both the shot put and discus for her home country of Jamaica. Opinion is set to take part in the triple jump while Green will run in the 200m. Mills and Opinion will have to work through qualification to reach the final of their field events while Green will have to qualify out of the first round and the semi-finals to reach Saturday's 200m final. 

As a freshman this past season Mills competed unattached, but in June captured both the U20 Jamaican title in the shot put and the discus. Mills' owns personal bests of 15.88m (52- 1/4) in the shot put and 53.85m (176-8) in the discus. Opinion, who will represent Nigeria, also completed a redshirt season for the University of Minnesota in 2025-26, and holds personal bests of 15.80m (51-10) in the triple jump. Green earned All-America honors last season as a freshman with the Golden Gophers with the 4x400m relay. The third leg of Minnesota's Second Team All-America finish, Green helped clock a season-best of 3:04.12 in Eugene at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Championships. In the 200m Green holds a wind-aided lifetime best of 20.17 (+3.5 m/s) with a non-wind aided personal best of 20.42 (+0.1 m/s).
