COLUMBUS, OHIO- The Minnesota Golden Gophers broke through after a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning to defeat the Ohio State Buckeyes 6-4 Sunday securing the sweep.
This is the first time the program has earned a sweep since the 2022 season where they swept Western Illinois at home. Sunday also marked the first Big Ten sweep since the 2019 season.
Junior Joe Sperry (3-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Minnesota (16-17, 5-10). The right-hander went 4.1 shutout innings without giving up a hit, one walk and striking out three. Sophomore Tyler Hemmesch also pitched well, going 2.1 shutout innings while allowing two hits, walking one and striking out three.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 3-0, the Golden Gophers first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Minnesota managed to push across two runs in the inning.
The Buckeyes expanded their lead to 4-2 before the Golden Gophers offense got back to work, tying it up in the sixth. Minnesota got back-to-back run-scoring doubles from junior Drew Berkland and senior Jake Perry to pick up a couple of runs, which evened the score at 4-4.
That 4-4 tie turned into a 5-4 Minnesota lead in the eighth. The Golden Gophers added a run on junior Weber Neels' two-out solo home run off senior Luke Carrell.
Minnesota held the Buckeyes without a run before their offense got back in action the next inning. The Golden Gophers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of junior Sam Hunt, bringing the score to 6-4 in favor of Minnesota. The score remained 6-4 for the rest of the game, as the Golden Gophers held on for the win.
