Gophers Fall 8-6 in Weekend Opener to Indiana

3/20/2026 9:27:00 PM | Baseball

BLOOMINGTON, IND. – The University of Minnesota baseball team opened up their three game road series against Indiana University tonight, seeing all nine starters reach base safely but falling to the Hoosiers 8-6 at Bart Kaufman Field.

Joe Sperry came out of the bullpen for Minnesota and was credited with the loss. Luke Ryerse was a bright spot for the Gophers, coming out of the bullpen as well and throwing 3.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Gophers got on the board immediately, jumping out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. Ty Allen got things going by splitting the infield with an RBI single up the middle to score the first run of the tilt. Davis Hamilton quickly followed it up by tallying two RBIs on a double out to left field. An RBI groundout from Michael Lippe capped off a four run inning for Minnesota.

The Hoosiers gained some ground, narrowing the lead to 4-2 before the Gophers expanded their advantage in the second. A two out, two run home run to straight away center field off the bat of Charlie Sutherland brought the score to 6-2 in favor of Minnesota heading into the third.

The Gophers were unable to hold the lead, as Indiana scored six runs throughout the third and fifth innings to grab game one at 8-6.
