The redshirt sophomore broke the six-year old record on Friday night.
MINNEAPOLIS – For the second consecutive meet a University of Minnesota track and field record fell, the latest being redshirt sophomore Ali Weimer in the women's 10,000m. Weimer set the record on Friday night at the Paul Derr Track & Field Facility in Raleigh, N.C.Â
The Maroon and Gold spent three nights in Raleigh, starting on Thursday and ending on Saturday afternoon. Weimer's 10,000m performance helped her finish 11th overall in a field that included each of the top 34 times in the country this season (as of March 29). Weimer's record breaks former Golden Gopher All-American Megan Hasz's school record of 33:09.57 that was set back in 2019 at the Stanford Invitational. The 10,000m school record for Weimer is the second she has set during the 2024-25 academic year with the St. Michael, Minn., native also setting Minnesota's cross country 6000m school record (19:25.0) in November.Â
Minnesota had four other program top 10 performances go down in Raleigh over the weekend. Redshirt freshman Aidan Jones was the lone men's competitor to break through, setting the No. 8 fastest time at the 'U' in the 5000m. Jones' time of 13:48.88 is the fastest by a Gopher in the event since 2022 (Alec Basten, Matthew Wilkinson, Owen Hoeft) and helped him finish 32nd overall out of the 223 competitors in the 5000m.Â
In the women's 5000m it was both Izzy Roemer and Emma Atkinson who put forth all-time top 10 times for the Maroon and Gold. Roemer (16:22.52 - 7th all-time) and Atkinson (16:25.45 - 9th all-time) set their lifetime bests in the 5000m in the same heat in Raleigh with Roemer finishing 45th overall and Atkinson 51st out of the 212 competitors who started their races.Â
The final program top 10 performance came in the women's 800m with Zoie Dundon's time of 2:06.62. A night after Dundon finished sixth overall in the 3000m steeplechase (10:11.84) the All-American finished 12th overall in Raleigh and now is 10th all-time at Minnesota in the outdoor 800m.Â
Making her outdoor debut as a member of the Golden Gophers was Isabelle Schmitz of Rochester, Minn. The true freshman nearly clocked a program top 10 time in the 3000m steeplechase in her debut, but was less than a second short with a time of 10:16.85 (10:16.37 is 10th all-time at Minnesota) which was good enough for 11th overall at the Raleigh Relays.Â
Minnesota's next action will be in Gainesville, Fla., for the Florida Relays from April 4-5. Minnesota will also compete that week in St. Paul, at the Hamline Invitational on April 5.Â
