Nabwe, Streit Highlight Gophers Effort at Home

The Gophers picked up 20 event wins at the University of Minnesota Classic.

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota track and field team posted 20 event victories at the University of Minnesota Classic on Saturday afternoon at the University Fieldhouse. Anthonett Nabwe catapulted herself to No. 2 in the NCAA in the women's weight throw while teammate Hadley Streit moved up to No. 11 nationally in the same event.

Nabwe's effort of 23.21m (76-1 3/4) came early in the day, on her first attempt of the women's weight throw competition. The redshirt sophomore has now pushed herself to the top spot in the Big Ten just 22 days until the conference indoor championships in Indianapolis.

For Streit, her lifetime best toss of 22.12m (72-7) improved her previous best mark by three feet to push to the No. 5 spot in program history. With the throw Streit puts herself in serious contention to make the NCAA Indoor Championships, which take the top 16 for the weight throw after the indoor conference championships are contested.

Lexy Berger won the women's pole vault with a slight improvement on her season-best, clearing 4.12m (13-6 1/4). Other notable personal best performances from Minnesota's women included: Ella Pavlovich (Weight Throw, 19.21m | 63-0 1/4), Isabelle Schmidt (Shot Put, 14.74m | 48-4 1/2), Lila Branchaw (Mile, 4:58.16) and Ellie Kuechle (600m, 1:34.14).

Minnesota's unattached student-athletes comprised of 11 of the Maroon and Gold's 20 victories on Saturday. One of the more electric performances came in the men's 60m hurdles, where Minnesota swept the top three positions in the final, led by Michael Buchanan's lifetime best 7.72. Just behind Buchanan were teammates Spencer Brown (7.76) and Christian Martin (7.77) who all posted personal bests in the race as well. Buchanan in the process broke a decade-long Fieldhouse record in the 60m hurdles, held by Myles Hunter of Minnesota State (7.74).

The Big Ten's returning outdoor champions Charles Godfred and Jak Urlacher both were victorious at the University of Minnesota Classic. Godfred posted an impressive 7.92m (26-0) long jump mark to win while Urlacher cleared 5.17m (16-11 1/2) to win the pole vault. Godfred's mark breaks a 31-year-old Fieldhouse record held by Tyrone Minor (7.75m) back in 1994.

Hakeem Ford had a breakout performance in the men's triple jump to claim the win with a leap of 15.62m (51-3). Using a shortened 10-step approach, Ford broke his previous lifetime best by over a foot. Teammate Max Erdmann also posted a quality mark of 14.39m (47-2 1/2), finishing second overall.

Other event victories for Minnesota's unattached student-athletes included: Dwyne Smith Jr. (400m, 48.39), Ramy Ayoub (800m, 1:51.45), Sophia Bablitch (800m, 2:17.13), Nolan Sutter (Mile, 4:12.14), Diarra Sow (Triple Jump, 12.78m | 41-11 1/4) Isaiah Schafer (Shot Put, 18.96m | 62-2 1/2) and Angelos Mantzouranis (Weight Throw, 22.67m | 74-4 1/2).

Next weekend the Maroon and Gold head to the Windy City Invite from Feb. 14-15, held in Chicago at the Dr. Worrill Indoor Track Facility.
