Nabwe's silver-medal finish is the best hammer throw placement in school history.

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota women's track and field team claimed 13 team points on the opening day of the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., at Hayward Field. Anthonett Nabwe claimed her first NCAA Championships outdoor medal with a NCAA runner-up performance in the hammer throw while teammate Hadley Streit finished fourth overall.

The 13 team points from Coach Peter Miller's hammer throwers are the most for the women's program at an NCAA final in program history. Nabwe and Streit also became the first Gophers to both reach an NCAA final in the hammer throw in the same year. Both Nabwe's runner-up finish and Streit's fourth place are the best finishes in the women's NCAA final in program history, besting Temi Ogunrinde's fifth-place finish in 2019 (68.85m | 225-10).

Nabwe, a 'The Bowerman' Watch List member, kicked off the second flight with the competition's first 70+ meter throw with her 72.68m (238-5). That lead held until round three when Elisabet Rut Runarsdottir, the No. 2 ranked NCAA hammer thrower in 2026, tossed a mark of 73.19m (240-1). Nabwe fouled in rounds two and three while Streit's flight one mark of 68.07m (223-4) held on for a finals spot, and three more throws. Streit went right to work in the final, sending a round-four mark of 69.50m (228-0) to leap to fourth overall – where she would end the day. In the final Nabwe tossed a fourth-round 68.47m (224-7) and a foul in rounds four and five before needing a winning throw on her final attempt to pass Rut Runarsdottir of Texas State. On the penultimate throw of the final Nabwe improved to 73.15m (240-0), the sixth-best throw of the Liberian's hammer throw career, but the mark was just four centimeters short of her second NCAA title of 2026 (Indoor Weight Throw).

Minnesota's next-best placement on Thursday at Hayward Field was Zoie Dundon in the women's 3000m steeplechase semifinal. The 2024 NCAA finalist clocked the fastest time of her career at 9:50.96 to finish 16th overall for an NCAA Second Team All-America finish. The time for Dundon leaped the Burnsville, Minn., native past the great Madeline Strandemo (9:51.49) for No. 2 all-time at the University of Minnesota in the steeplechase. Dundon now is a three-time All-American overall and a two-time Second Team All-American in the steeplechase. Earlier this season Dundon also earned a First Team All-America finish in the indoor 800m (2:01.42).

Both Nontokozo Ncube and Kennedy Martinson earned Honorable Mention All-America finishes in their respective events on Thursday. Ncube, a former NJCAA National Champion, clocked a 51.89 in the NCAA 400m semifinal round to finish 19th overall at the NCAA Championships. Martinson's performance of 59.22 was good enough for 23rd overall in the NCAA in her first season running the 400m hurdles. Minnesota's school-record holder in the 400m hurdles earned her first bid to the NCAA Championships with her 56.43 at the NCAA West Regional.

The final competition of the night featured Nabwe in the women's shot put. Flights one and two were ran simultaneously with Nabwe sitting outside of the final (top 9) entering her third and final preliminary toss. With her clutch third-round throw of 17.40m (57-1) Nabwe jumped to seventh overall and held on for ninth before she officially claimed her spot in her first NCAA shot put final. In the final Nabwe was unable to improve on her third-round throw and settled for a Second Team All-America finish, her seventh All-American distinction of her illustrious career.

Minnesota's women have just one event remaining in Eugene – the women's NCAA triple jump final. Diarra Sow competes in her third career NCAA Championships on Saturday at 7:10 p.m. CT on ESPN+, or via the ESPN app. Sow enters the competition with the 13th-best mark in the NCAA this season and begins out of flight two and is 12th in the order.
