The Star Tribune Metro Track Athlete of the Year is a Golden Gopher. Dwyne Smith Jr., of Appley Valley claimed the title after setting the Minnesota state record in the 400m at 46.87 as well as setting an indoor state record in the 400m in 48.73, a time he ran at Minnesota's University Fieldhouse at the Griak Indoor Classic back in January. Smith went on to win the state outdoor 400m, was the runner up in the 200m and was fourth in the 100m. After the high school season Smith went on to win the prestigious Brooks PR Invitational in the 400m, clocking a 47.04.
