Nabwe and Schmitz Highlight Gophers at Graduate Classic

1/18/2025 3:29:00 PM | Women's Track & Field

The Gophers competed in Lincoln, Neb., at the Devaney Center Indoor Track.

MINNEAPOLIS – University of Minnesota true freshman Isabelle Schmitz and redshirt sophomore Anthonett Nabwe highlighted the Gophers performances in Lincoln, Neb., at the Graduate Classic.

Nabwe won the women's weight throw while Schmitz put down the fastest mile time by a Gopher freshman and also was third in the 800m.

In the women's weight throw on Friday, Nabwe claimed the win with a toss of 21.30m (69-10 3/4). The win is the fourth-straight regular season weight throw competition Nabwe has won and the sixth-straight meet she has gone beyond 20-meters, dating back to last season.

Schmitz's weekend began on Friday in the mile, posting a time of 4:43.43 to finish as the Graduate Classic runner-up. Then on Saturday the Hutchinson, Minn., native ran to a third-place finish in her 800m college debut in a time of 2:08.08. Both times for Schmitz land her just outside the program's all-time top 10 lists, but does give her the fastest time by a freshman in the 1600m in program history.

In Saturday's 60m hurdles competition, Zariyah Black led the way for the Maroon and Gold with a runner-up finish. Black's time of 8.30 is an early season best with Maja Maunsbach (8.35), Dyandra Gray (8.46 - Season Best) and Kennedy Martinson (8.56 - Personal Best) finishing behind Black to help Minnesota sweep spots two through five in Lincoln. For Martinson, the time of 8.56 is 0.01 seconds faster than her previous lifetime best, which keeps her at the No. 8 spot in program history.

Gray also added a victory in the women's 400m. Gray clocked a 55.17 on Friday, helping Minnesota capture each of the top six spots at the meet in the event. Gray's time is a lifetime best by over a second, indoors or outdoors, for the senior.

Other quality performances from the Golden Gophers at the Graduate Classic included: Hailey Anchor (400m - 56.56, 600m - 1:34.00), Lexy Berger (Pole Vault - 4.09m | 13-5), Kennedy Martinson (Long Jump - 5.57m | 18-3 1/4), Isabelle Schmidt (17.70m | 58-1), Kitania Headley (600m - 1:33.77), Victory Godah (60m - 7.43, 200m - 24.65).

The Maroon and Gold return home to host the Jack Johnson Classic on January 24-25 at the University Fieldhouse.
