Martinson, Nabwe shined for the Gophers during the two-day meet.

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota picked up a total of 15 event wins during the 2025 Jack Johnson Classic at the University Fieldhouse on Friday and Saturday. The 'U' was led by notable victories from Anthonett Nabwe (Shot Put and Weight Throw) and Kennedy Martinson (Pentathlon).

Martinson was the first Gopher to make a splash at the Jack Johnson Classic, posting a lifetime best 3,836 points to win the pentathlon and now sits at No. 12 nationally and No. 7 all-time at Minnesota. The point total for Martinson comes in just her third career pentathlon and goes down as the most points by a Gopher in the event since Allison Gerads (4,088 points) in 2021. During her pentathlon Martinson posted personal bests in the 60m hurdles, long jump and 800m. Martinson's 8.44 in the pentathlon 60m hurdles also moved her up to a tie for seventh-fastest in school history in the overall 60m hurdles all-time list.

Nabwe's victories both came on Saturday, with the shot put coming first followed by the weight throw. Nabwe posted an indoor lifetime best 17.23m (56-6 1/2) to win the event on her fourth attempt. Nabwe also led her series off with a toss of 17.09m. Nabwe's final mark puts her No. 2 all-time at Minnesota and was just shy of the indoor record held by Kiley Sabin (17.47m in 2019).

Minnesota's other winners on the women's side included Alliyah McNeil (5.96m, Long Jump), Nyalaam Jok (1.73m, High Jump) and Lexy Berger (3.74m, Pole Vault). Diarra Sow also won the women's triple jump as an unattached competitor with a leap of 12.67m (41-7).

The Maroon and Gold also had eight victories on the weekend by unattached competitors on the men's side. Isaiah Schafer posted a victorious shot put mark of 19.82m (65-0 1/2) on his final attempt. Gopher great Kostas Zaltos hurled a winning weight throw mark of 23.76m (77-11 1/2) to hold off teammates Angelos Mantzouranis (23.25m | 76-3 1/2) and Jordan Dunigan (18.61m | 61-0 3/4).

Minnesota's men also saw Chrsitian Martin win the 60m hurdles in a breakout day for the unattached Gopher. After a swift preliminary round, Martin returned to win the final by 0.01 seconds at 7.78, holding off teammate Spencer Brown who was the runner up at 7.79, both personal bests. First year Gopher Frankie Gray set a fieldhouse 300m record on Saturday in a time of 33.86 while freshman Dywne Smith Jr. posted a time of 48.48 to win the men's 400m. Lastly, Jak Urlacher won the men's pole vault with a clearance of 5.13m (17-5) and Hakeem Ford's 15.24m (50-0) mark in the triple jump also secured a win.

Next weekend the Maroon and Gold will be split between the Meyo Invitational on the campus of Notre Dame and the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis from Jan. 31 until Feb. 1.
