Gophers Held Quiet in Series Finale with Michigan

4/7/2019 3:30:00 PM | Baseball

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Gopher Baseball dropped 2-of-3 in its Big Ten Conference road series against Michigan this weekend, falling 8-0 in Sunday's rubber match at Ray Fisher Stadium.

The Wolverines staked an early lead with solo home runs by Jesse Franklin and Jimmy Kerr in the first and second innings, respectively. Minnesota (13-16, 6-3 Big Ten) put a runner on base in each of the first five innings but could not get the timely knock against Michigan (22-8, 3-2 Big Ten) starter Jeff Criswell (2-1). The right-hander worked 6.2 innings for the Wolverines, scattering three hits while striking out eight.

The day ended earlier than Gophers starter Joshua Culliver (2-2) would have preferred with the right-hander chased after 2.1 innings with a pair of runners in scoring position for Michigan Nick Lackney entered from the bullpen and needed just two pitches to escape the jam.

Minnesota loaded the bases in the top of the fourth, but Criswell forced a groundball double play to put an end to the threat. The Wolverines tacked on another run to their lead in the bottom of the inning and would eventually score in 6-of-8 innings in which they batted. Jack Blomgren's fifth-inning home run extended the lead to 5-0 and forced the Gophers to go deeper in their bullpen with five pitchers working on the day.

Ben Mezzenga reached base four times on the day 2-for-3 with a walk and forced an error on the infield. He reached third base when Minnesota again loaded the bases in the top of the eighth inning, but Michigan turned its third double play of the game to end the threat. Jack Wassel had a pair of hits, including a double in the ninth inning. Drew Hmielewski added a pair of singles.

NOTABLE
Rookie J.P. Massey gave Minnesota its first 1-2-3 inning of the day in the sixth … the Gophers entered the weekend having won 10-straight Big Ten series … Wassel extended his hitting streak to five games and had six hits in the series against Michigan.

UP NEXT
Minnesota returns to Siebert Field Tuesday for "Game of Thrones" Night as the Gophers meet North Dakota State to decide who rules the North. First pitch against the Bison is set for 5 p.m.

Single-game tickets remain available for all Siebert Field home games. Tickets for Minnesota's Saturday, April 20 home game against Oklahoma at Target Field will be available for purchase at the box office on day of game. Gopher season ticket holders and students will receive free admission for the Big Ten-Big 12 showdown.
