Gophers Rule the North after Meyer's Walk-off Shot

MINNEAPOLIS – Outfielder Max Meyer slugged his first collegiate home run to walk the Gopher Baseball team off as a 4-3 winner over North Dakota State in the border rivalry game at Siebert Field on Tuesday evening.
Meyer pinch hit in the seventh and then moved to right field, coming back around for the game-winning blast to give Minnesota the win in the bottom of the ninth. Chase Stanke walked with one out in the inning and pinch runner Jacob Hitz came around to score on Meyer's big fly.
Brett Schulze (5-0) struck out both batters he faced in the top of the ninth. Schulze already owned Minnesota's longest winning streak for a pitcher and now moves to 14-0 in his last 39 appearances, dating back to the 2017 season. Parker Harm (3-2) allowed two runs in just 0.1 inning of relief for North Dakota State (8-15).
Mitch O'Connor worked the first 3.0 innings for NDSU, allowing just one earned on two hits. The bullpen continued to hold the Gophers quiet before back-to-back singles by Ben Mezzenga and Wilson leading off the sixth, but a pair of strikeouts kept Minnesota off the board. NDSU's pitching staff collected just seven strikeouts in the game, while Thoresen and Jeff Fasching combined for 10 strikeouts in the first five innings. As a staff, the Gophers would collect 14 strikeouts on the day.

The Maroon & Gold struck for a run in the bottom of the first after Eli Wilson skied a single that dropped in to the outfield, and Jordan Kozicky followed with a two-out double off the right field wall. Sam Thoresen rolled through three scoreless innings before running into trouble in the fourth. The Bison drew five walks in the inning and broke up the no-hit bid with an infield single off the bat of Charley Hesse to take a 3-1 lead. Thoresen finished his day with 3.2 innings pitched, striking out six but walking the same number.WHAT A TIME TO HIT YOUR FIRST HOMERUN MAX MEYER! pic.twitter.com/Udx60Ng5oC
