Gophers Open Big Ten Play with Three-Game Sweep at PSU

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The University of Minnesota baseball team added a pair of wins on Sunday to sweep a three-game series at Penn State to begin Big Ten Conference play for the season.

After a 5-1 win on Saturday, the Maroon & Gold closed out the weekend with a 7-5 matinee win over the Nittany Lions on Sunday before picking up an 8-6 victory in the series finale.

The Gophers have now won 15-consecutive contests against Penn State while the series sweep this weekend gives Minnesota its first three-game winning streak of the season.

Minnesota 7, Penn State 5
Easton Bertrand's solo home run in the top of the ninth inning carried the University of Minnesota baseball team to a 7-5 victory over Penn State on Sunday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader with the Nittany Lions.

The sophomore outfielder went 3-for-5 at the plate with three runs and two RBIs as he extended his hitting streak to nine games in the victory.

For the second game in a row, Minnesota battled back from an early deficit as Penn State plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning. It didn't take long for the Maroon & Gold as the Gophers scored two in the second and added another two in the third to take the lead. Zack Raabe singled in a pair of runs in the second while a Cole McDevitt double and a Jordan Kozicky sacrifice fly in the third brought home two more runs for the Maroon & Gold.

Penn State briefly reclaimed the lead when Kris Kremer doubled in a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Gophers bats carried them the rest of the way.

McDevitt picked up his second RBI of the game in the top of the seventh when he singled home Bertrand for the game-tying run before Bertrand picked up the winning run with his third home run of the season in the ninth. Minnesota added an insurance run when Kozicky scored on a throwing error.

Jake Stevenson picked up the win in the opening game after coming on to work four innings of relief and allowing two hits and striking out five to move to 1-1 on the season. Brett Schulze picked up the save – his second of the season – with an unblemished ninth inning including two strikeouts. Patrick Fredrickson, Jeff Fasching and J.P. Massey also saw time on the mound for the Gophers. Mason Mellott fell to 4-1 on the season with the loss for Penn State, pitching the final four innings.

Minnesota 8, Penn State 6
Jordan Kozicky factored into five of Minnesota's eight runs as the University of Minnesota baseball team completed a weekend sweep at Penn State with an 8-6 win on Sunday evening.

With a run scored and four RBI, Kozicky went 3-for-5 at the plate while Ben Mezzenga was 3-for-4 with a walk while scoring three times for the Maroon & Gold.

Things started fast for the Gophers in the series finale as Mezzenga doubled to left to lead off the game and came around to score later in the first inning when Eduardo Estrada singled him home. Mezzenga factored into Minnesota's second run of the day as well, leading off the third inning with a single and moving to second on an Eli Wilson single before scoring on a Kozicky single.

Jack Wassel and Drew Hmielewski added to the lead in the fourth inning as both Gophers batters cleared the right field wall for their first career home runs. Kozicky plated three more later in the inning with a double to right that scored Easten Bertrand, Eli Wilson and Mezzenga.

Penn State got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Gavin Homer hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded for one run, but a 6-4-3 double play by the Gophers got the visitors out of the jam on the next at-bat. The Nittany Lions added two more on a two-run home run by Ryan Sloniger in the bottom of the sixth.

The Gophers added one back when Chase Stanke singled through the right side to score Kozicky from first in the seventh inning before Penn State picked up three runs in the ninth to make it a two-run competition.

Brett Schulze picked up his third save of the season and second of the day by locking up the final out of the weekend for the Gophers. Joshua Culliver picked up the win to move to 2-1 on the year with six innings of work, three hits, three runs, four walks and two strikeouts. Nolan Burchill also saw action with 2.2 innings of work. Eric Mock took the loss for Penn State to fall to 2-1 on the season.
