Gophers Win in Round One of B1G Tourney

Bloomington, Ind. - The University of Minnesota defeated Indiana 5-4 in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament Wednesday morning.

The Gophers struck first in the bottom of the first inning with one run. Terrin Vavra recorded the first hit for the Maroon Gold when doubled down the left field line. Two batters later Vavra scored on a Toby Hanson single to center field.

Indiana scored four runs before Minnesota answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Luke Pettersen singled to right field then scored when Jordan Kozicky hit a home run on the next pitch.

Micah Coffey led off the bottom of the sixth inning with double to right field. He advanced to third base on a Hanson ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly from Matt Stemper.

The go-ahead run came in the bottom of the seventh inning. Pettersen drove a 1-1 pitch to left center for a double. He then advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Two batters later Vavra singled up the middle to give Minnesota a 5-4 lead.

Lucas Gilbreath started on the mound for the Maroon and Gold and tossed 5.1 innings. He allowed four earned runs on six hits while striking out six batters. Fred Manke picked up his second win after pitching 1.1 innings. He allowed only one hit and struck out two batters.

Brian Glowicki came in for 1.1 innings where he struck out two batters. The senior picked up his 16th save of the season, breaking Scott Matyas's program record set in 2009.

The Gophers will play the winner of the Michigan/Northwestern game tomorrow at 4 p.m. central time. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.

  • Kozicky extended his on-base streak to 36 consecutive games with the home run.
