Gophers Finish Series vs Purdue With a Win

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Minnesota picked up a 11-1 victory in the final game of a three-game series versus Purdue Friday after falling in the first two games.

The first game of the day was played after last night's game was suspended due to a power outage. The second and third games were rescheduled because of inclement weather in the Twin Cities area the rest of the weekend. The Maroon and Gold are now 33-19 overall and 15-8 in the Big Ten after Friday.

Game 1 - Minnesota: 2 Purdue: 5
The Gophers scored both of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Cole McDevitt sent a one-out single through the left side of the infield then advanced to second on a Luke Pettersen single. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch then scored when Ben Mezzenga sent a 2-1 pitch up the middle of the infield for a single.

Lucas Gilbreath started on the mound for the Gophers and tossed 6.1 innings. He allowed one earned run on five hits while five more runs were scored after errors. The lefty struck out six batters but picked up his second loss of the season.

Fred Manke took over for Gilbreath and pitched 0.2 innings, only allowing one hit. Jackson Rose pitched the rest of the game that resumed Friday. He threw two scoreless innings where he allowed two hits and struck out two batters.

Game Notes

Game 2 - Minnesota: 1 Purdue: 11
The Maroon and Gold scored their lone run in the bottom of the third inning. Pettersen singled to center field then advanced to second base on a Kozicky single to center. A third consecutive single, a bunt by Terrin Vavra, filled the bases for Micah Coffey. The junior flied out to center field but Pettersen tagged up and scored for a sacrifice fly.

Brett Schulze was the starter for the second game of the series and tossed 4.2 innings. The freshman allowed four runs on five hits while striking out three batters. With the loss, Schulze is 4-3 on the season.

Manke entered for the second time in as many games, pitching one inning. He allowed two earned runs on two hits. Next it was Tim Shannon's turn and he threw 1.1 innings where he gave up two hits and struck out one batter.

Nick Lackney pitched for one inning where he allowed one earned run after walking a batter. Alex Farley tossed 0.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits. The final Gopher pitcher was Jake Stevenson who retired the one batter he faced on a foul out.

Game Notes
  • Kozicky extended his on-base streak to 34 games with the single.
  • Vavra was 3-4 while Pettersen was 2-3.
  • Shannon made his 28th appearance of the season, tying Jason Karrmann's record from 1994.
Game 3 - Minnesota: 9 Purdue: 2
Purdue scored two quick runs in the first inning but they would not record a hit for the rest of the game. Minnesota exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The inning started with a Hanson single to right center then Smith bunted for a single. Stemper laid down a sacrifice bunt that allowed Hanson to score on a Pettersen single. McDevitt followed that with a walk to fill the bases for Eduardo Estrada, Jr who singled to center field, scoring Smith and Pettersen. A Mezzenga walk filled the bases again, this time for Kozicky who singled through the left side of the infield, allowing McDevitt to score. Estrada ended up scoring on a Coffey single then Mezzenga scored on a sacrifice fly by Hanson.
Minnesota tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when McDevitt and Pettersen scored on another Estrada single to center field. The final run came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Smith scored on a wild pitch.

Reggie Meyer started on the hill for the Gophers. He only allowed two earned runs on one hit in the first inning the cruised for his fourth win of the season. The right hander tossed five innings where he struck out three batters, retiring 13 of them in a row at one point during the game.

Toby Anderson made his final appearance at Siebert Field by throwing two innings of relief. He did not allow a run and struck out three of the batters he faced. Brian Glowicki tossed the final two innings of the game. He too threw hitless innings in his last Siebert Field appearance, striking out three batters.

The Gophers will head to the Big Ten Tournament in Bloomington, Ind. which begins on Wednesday, May 24. Tomorrow they will find out what seed they are once the other conference games are complete. The Maroon and Gold could finish first in the conference with both a Nebraska and Michigan loss.
