Gophers Defeat Iowa in DQ Classic

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Minnesota won their final game of the 30th Dairy Queen Classic Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium as they defeated Iowa 6-3.
The Gophers battled back after falling down 3-0 early in the first inning following a Robert Neustrom three-run home run. The scoring for the Maroon and Gold began in the bottom of third inning when Luke Pettersen singled through the left side of the diamond, scoring Matt Stemper.
Terrin Vavra then walked to fill the bases for Micah Coffey. The junior third baseman hit a double off the center field wall that tied the game when Ben Mezzenga and Pettersen scored. Vavra was thrown out at home plate on the play.
In the fourth inning, Minnesota scored the go-ahead run when Jordan Smith hit an opposite field home run to left center. It was Smith's second home run of the season. Insurance runs were added in the bottom of the eighth inning when Mezzenga singled to left field, scoring both Alex Boxwell and Smith.
Senior righty Toby Anderson started on the bump for the Gophers and picked up his first win of the season. Anderson threw 6.0 innings, allowing three hits, three earned runs and striking out four batters. After giving up the three-run home run in the top of the first, Anderson did not allow a hit until the sixth inning.
Nick Lackney game into the game in the seventh inning and pitched 1.2 innings of one-hit ball. He walked one batter but did not allow a run. Brian Glowicki pitched the final 1.1 innings where he picked up his fourth save of the season. He struck out one of the four batters he faced.

With three teams with 2-1 records in the tournament, Hawaii was determined the champions of the 30th Dairy Queen Classic because they had the best run differential.
