Meyer Records First Win of the Season

Lawrence, Kan. -- The University of Minnesota improved to 15-8 on the season Tuesday after defeating Kansas 5-2 at Hoglund Ballpark.

The Gophers took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. It started with Matt Stemper who singled though the left side then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Jordan Smith advanced Stemper to third base with a grounder to the second baseman.

With Stemper at third base, Jordan Kozicky doubled to right center making the score 1-0 in Minnesota's favor. Eduardo Estrada, Jr. followed that with a walk then two batters later Terrin Vavra walked to fill the bases for Luke Pettersen. He ended up sending a single to center field, scoring Kozicky and Estrada.

The Maroon and Gold extended their lead in the top of the sixth inning with two runs. Once again it was Stemper who started the scoring. This time he reached on an error by the right fielder then advanced to second base on the play.

Kozicky doubled to right center again to bring Stemper to make it 4-2 Minnesota. Cole McDevitt pinch hit for Estrada and reached base by an error by the left fielder which resulted in Kozicky advancing to second base. Two batters later Vavra walked again to fill the bases once again for Pettersen. This time Pettersen walked on four pitches to make the score 5-2.

Reggie Meyer started on the mound for the Gophers and pitched 6.0 innings. He allowed two earned runs on three hits and struck out two batters. Meyer picked up the win, his first of the season.

Nick Lackney took over for Meyer and gave up only one hit in 1.2 innings, striking out one better. Tim Shannon faced one batter in the bottom of the eighth inning which he got to pop out. Brian Glowicki came in for the ninth inning where he gave up only one hit en route to his ninth save of the season.

  • Minnesota has now won six straight.
  • Vavra recorded three walks tonight.
  • Pettersen was 3-3 to improve to a .397 batting average (31-78).
