Gilbreath Sets Career High as Gophers Fall

Sacramento, Cal. - The University of Minnesota fell 3-2 to Sacramento State Thursday at John Smith Field.

Lucas Gilbreath started on the mound for the Gophers. The junior left hander only allowed two hits and no runs while striking out nine batters in 6.0 innings. The nine strikeouts sets a new single-game high for Gilbreath.

Tyler Hanson entered the game in the seventh inning in relief for Gilbreath. The senior tossed 1.0 inning where he allowed three earned runs on three hits. Hanson recorded his second loss of the season. Brian Glowicki threw 1.0 innings where he gave up one hit and struck out two batters.

Minnesota scored first in the second inning when Toby Hanson walked with one out. He then advanced to second base on a Jordan Smith ground out then advanced to third base on a single off of the bat of Luke Pettersen. Matt Stemper then drove Hanson in with a single to center field.

In the third inning, Mezzenga led off the inning with a single to left field and was then advanced to third base two batters later when Micah Coffey singled to center field. One batter later, Hanson singled to left field which resulted in Mezzenga easily scoring from third base.

Tomorrow Brett Schulze will start game two of the series that begins at 8 p.m. central time. The freshman right hander is 1-2 with a 4.19 ERA and 15 strikeouts.
