The 19th-ranked Minnesota baseball program was defeated in the series finale versus Indiana on Sunday afternoon, 3-2. The Gophers (30-15, 12-5 Big Ten) suffered their first series defeat since March 20 and first in conference play this season.

Connor Schaefbauer guided the offense with a 3-for-4 performance at the dish and he was responsible for plating both of Minnesota's runs. Dan Motl added a triple, while Jordan Smith chimed in with a double in the contest at Siebert Field.

On the mound, Toby Anderson fell to 6-1 on the season, despite having a solid final line. Anderson worked 6.1 innings, allowing nine hits and three runs (two earned).

The Maroon and Gold opened the scoring in the bottom of the third. J. Smith led off with a double in the gap and advanced to third on a hit from Luke Pettersen. Two batters later, Schaefbauer took a pitch the other way by slapping an RBI single to left field and give Minnesota a 1-0 lead.

Anderson kept the Hoosiers (28-17, 13-5) off the board for the opening four innings and worked out of jams in the third and fourth stanzas.

However, Indiana took over the lead in the top of the fifth by a run-scoring, ground-rule double and an error in the field by the Gophers.

Minnesota knotted the game back up at 2-2 in its next at-bat. Motl laced a stand-up triple that was just out of the reach of the center fielder. Schaefbauer again delivered with an RBI single, this time right back up the middle, to tie the game.

The Hoosiers netted their third and final run of the game in the top of the sixth from a single to center.

Lucas Gilbreath then came on, closed out the sixth and worked a clean seventh frame.

Jordan Jess made his way to the mound for the ninth frame and did not allow a baserunner, highlighted by an inning-ending strikeout.

However, Indiana's bullpen kept the Gophers off the scoreboard for the final three innings and secured the series for the road team.

Minnesota returns to the field next weekend when it travels to West Lafayette, Ind. for a three-game set at Purdue.
