The University of Minnesota baseball team grabbed its fourth win of the season behind a 4-hit performance by Terrin Vavra and solid pitching from Dalton Sawyer and Fred Manke in a 3-1 victory over Campbell on Saturday. The Gophers (4-2) smacked 11 hits, including seven across the final five innings, to notch their sixth straight game with double-digit hits to open the 2016 campaign.

In total, Vavra finished a career day at the dish 4-for-5 and became the second freshman this season to tout a 4-hit game (Riley Smith vs. Utah).

Sawyer started the afternoon on the mound and went 6.1 innings with seven hits, one earned run and tied a season-high with five strikeouts. The senior from Waconia, Minn. moved his record to 2-0 on the season while forcing the Camels (3-3) to strand nine runners on base.

After a clean opening two innings, Campbell opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with a triple preceding an infield RBI single.

Minnesota did not trail for long as it knotted the game back up at 1-1 following an error that gave Micah Coffey second base and he was brought in by advancing on back-to-back popouts by Matt Stemper and Connor Schaefbauer.

The Gophers grabbed their first lead of the game in the next frame when Matt Fiedler produced a sacrifice fly that scored Dan Motl with one out. Minnesota maintained a 2-1 advantage until the seventh stanza.

Just before the seventh inning stretch, Micah Coffey grounded into a fielder's choice that plated Vavra, who led the frame off with a base knock up the middle. The Maroon and Gold held a 3-1 lead at that point.

The Camels were limited to just four hits from the fourth inning to the end of the game as Sawyer and Manke kept the hitters off-balance by mixing up pitches and totaling eight strikeouts.

Manke came on in the seventh and got a well-earned save by tossing 2.2 innings and allowed just one hit while striking out three.

In the non-conference contest, Toby Hanson, Jordan Smith and Fiedler each upped their hitting streaks to six games as all three have picked up at least one hit in every game this season.

Minnesota and Campbell close out the series in the rubber match tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Jim Perry Stadium.
