Minnesota Falls 5-1 in Series Opener at Northwestern

5/1/2026 3:20:00 PM | Softball

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Northwestern Wildcats proved to be too much for Minnesota on Friday afternoon, as the Golden Gophers fell 5-1 in the opening game of the three-game series.

Natalie Susa (1-8) got the ball to start for Minnesota (15-34, 6-16 B1G) and took the loss. Macy Richardson was a bright spot for the Golden Gophers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing three innings, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out one.

In the batter's box, the Golden Gophers were led by Jessa Snippes, who drove in Minnesota's lone run on a 1-for-2 day with a walk. Jae Cosgriff also contributed with a hit, while Cassie Johnson scored the Gophers' only run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Minnesota fell behind early, as Northwestern plated one run in the first inning and added another in the second to take a 2-0 lead.

The Golden Gophers answered in the third inning. After Jae Cosgriff reached on an error and Cassie Johnson advanced into scoring position, Jessa Snippes singled to right field to bring Johnson home and cut the deficit to 2-1.

Northwestern responded in the fifth inning, breaking the game open with three runs on four hits to extend its lead to 5-1.

Minnesota was unable to generate additional offense down the stretch, as Northwestern's pitching staff held the Gophers to just two hits over the final four innings.
